Grails. Let's hear em

Hello all hope your having a great afternoon, or morning, or whatever (I should put that on a t shirt). I went past my local jewellers yesterday and it got me thinking. What is your favourite watch currently in your collection and what is your endgame grail, if you have one. I'll go first. My favourite is my DW5600 and my endgame grail is either a GMT batman or a 5 digit subby (I love the maxi pips but I hate the slabbiness of the new model). What are yours?

my grail watch used to be black submariner as i start watch collecting from my friend that wear a black sub. it was a eye opened experience to hold, to feel and to looking that watch for the first time.

but as time goes by and everybody owns a black sub i dont really like it anymore as my grail watch. nowadays my grail watch is jlc reverso, it is underappreciated outside watch community. but i really like that watch and the style, it is versatile and elegant design. hope someday i would be able to buy it 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Don’t have a current favourite, plus I don’t want to upset some of them.

If only possible… the stuff of dreams…

Something about the design of the Vacheron Constantin 1921 is so timeless, would love to own a watch from one of the big three!

Image

My favourite watch in my current collection is my Rolex Datejust 36. Something about it just feels different than other watches, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

·

Cartier tank is my current grail. Preferably a Francaise. Preferably a chronograph. But beggers can't be choosers. Aiming to get one this year.

Image

I'm also currently lusting for a Fears archival too, but I'll have to see if it's a love that lasts

Image

I certainly wouldn't call these 'exit watches' though. I intend to curate a collection of grails 😁

...so perhaps these are more just 'watches I want' rather than grails???

What would the definition of a grail be? That you don't want any more after that one? Or is it something close to unobtainable?

·

My current favourite is easy...

Image

My grail is a bit harder... I don't really aspire to own expensive luxury watches, and can essentially at will buy whatever I want in the price range I stick to.

If I had to pick a luxury grail, it would be something like a SeaQ Panorama Date in two tone.

My definition is what watch do you want more than any in the world? The one that makes you go "no matter the price, no matter how long, I will own that"

The obtainable grail for me has been and will be a Speedmaster.

The unobtainable grail for me is the one of the Snoopy Speedmasters.  I have always been a huge fan of Snoopy specifically out of all the Peanuts and I have an instant nostalgic and happy feel tied to seeing Snoopy and Woodstock.  I am quite the sucker for all that is going on there with the history and playfulness combined.

For the longest time my grail didn’t exist: a modern 36mm explorer. I like The classic size and proportions better than the 39, but didn’t want to deal with a 10+ year old watch. Then about a year ago Rolex made it. In December I was able to get one at retail and I absolutely love it. I still plan on getting other watches (I have a Willard/Uemura in the mail now) but I honestly could just sell everything and live with the Rolex if I really wanted to

ALS 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst. My jaw dropped when I saw it in person from ALS private event.

$346,0000…. I’d continue to study and work hard with this aspiration piece back in my mind😵

Well, I have a baby 1815… Stowa Marine 36 and I‘m enjoying as much as my datejust.😃

I know exactly what you mean mate. My grandfather has a 6117-6400 in his watchbox and it's like nothing else in his collection. Vintage seikos just have something about them don't they?

Definitely something about vintage seikos they just built so well and look stunning, plus I find modern watches a bit on the large side with a few exceptions.

Looks like we have similar tastes! I would love to have a Zenith El Primero, also a big a fan of the VC 1921, and just picked up a Santos with the blue dial today! the Blue isn’t quite as strong as the pictures make out but it’s still a beautiful watch.

She looks great on your wrist. I've been meaning to drop into my local Cartier in the hopes to see it in the metal but I doubt they would have one in stock. Also I think I need to try them on to decide whether the large or medium would be suitable for my wrist. Needless to say, I am green (blue?) with envy. But then again, I suppose I have the El Primero. Interesting to know that the blue isn't as vibrant. Your pic seems to show it as a darker blue. What's the sunburst action like?

The Zenith looks great, I’ve also been looking at the Defy 21, if just for that 1/100th chronograph action!

The sunburst is really nice, very subtle, I wouldn’t say it extends all the way to the numerals like the stock photo suggests, in most lighting conditions it looks like it makes it to about as far as the inner ring on the dial, which makes the numerals look like they are on solid black so they really pop.

The large also doesn’t feel as big as the name suggests, I think because the whole case has a slight curve to it, so it sits really nicely on the wrist. I also tried on the medium and it almost seemed too small, although I am a fan of bigger watches in most cases.

Yeah, the 1/100th is an impressive feat to accomplish with a mechanical for sure! Not at all practical but hey, I am a sucker for human ingenuity....ha, like 1/10th is practical though, right? I just like the premise of the high beat providing a readable 1/10th of a second vs the typical 1/8th...which if you want to argue practicality...

I also saw somewhere that the blue Cartier has a moon phase model....maybe I was dreaming but that would be my grail...for now. Love that Santos! Such a timeless design...pun intended.

Grail is this or a VC 1921

My current  favorite is this, which has had by far the most wrist time in the last year.

My grail is still the Tudor Black Bay heritage or 58. As a blue collar type guy dropping that much on a watch is a ways off. But one day. It's such a great do it all watch.
