Impulse Purchase verses Patience

I have been stalking a watch for quite a long time now. For purposes of this post we shall call it Blue as that is it's color. The particular watch company was sold out of some other colors, and one of the first colors to sell out was White. While White was very nice, it did not continue to catch my eye the way that Blue did. I started looking for photos of both watches, I watched YouTube videos on both watches. I always liked Blue just a tad bit better than White. One day I decided to email the watch company to tell them how amazing I thought their watches were and specifically asked a question about when White might be back in stock. I do not really know why, but I was curious I guess. The woman who responded was extremely nice -- she thanked me for the compliments and indicated that she checked and she had one White still available and it was mine if I wanted it. Not expecting this at all I asked if I could have a day to think about it. She of course said yes, to take my time. The company was not going to sell White but it was mine if I wanted it.

I actually took two days. During the first couple of hours I took screen shots of both watches and sent them to my wife. She liked Blue better but said she liked it because it matched my eyes. Not what I really wanted to hear, but I value her opinion. I found myself unintentionally trying to convince her that White was what I should go with. She succumbed to the pressure and said get the White. I reached out to my daughter and did the same, she said get the White because it is more versatile - valid point I thought, but was she being honest or telling me what I wanted to hear? I continued to struggle and ponder my options. I even started drafting an email asking the nice customer support person to invoice me for White, but I did not send it. Day two, my eyes are actually sore because I have studied these watches so much. I continued to go back and forth, re-watching the videos to see if perhaps I missed something. You know because you all have done this.

Revelation What I finally realized is that I never really wanted White. I felt as though I needed it, that I should get it because it was unobtainable; I could have something that others could not. Do not fall for the hype that centers around watches. Take your time, follow your heart, and be patient. In the end, if you still feel as strong about the watch as you did when you first started stalking it, go with that watch (if you can afford it) -- not what others think.

I realize that I have rambled on in this post, but if I can help just one person it is worth it. Please feel free to share any information or thoughts that you might have learned along your watch journey as it might be helpful to another stalker -- I mean collector.

I tend to take months to decide on whether or a not a watch is right for me. It helps me avoid impulse buys, and gives me lots of time to decide on whether I want to own the watch, or just think it's cool.

Buy what you love, not what other people want.

I hope you have ordered the blue already.

Yup, allow yourself to fall in love and then let logic creep in after the lusting period has ended. We don't all need to buy every watch that turns our head . . . sometimes it makes zero sense for your tastes, lifestyle, wrist size, eye sight, and perhaps collection goals.

I'm extra careful to not let influencers influence me as well. Who needs an expensive commercial these days when you have influencers parading as "a collector just like you" telling you what they are excited about (and may or may not be selling in their online shop). I respect the hustle for sure though. Also, extra careful to not let the majority community voice influence me too much . . . I hate divers and rotating bezels for the most part. Rolex does zero for me (the Milgauss maybe was the only one I kind of liked . . . but kind of is not enough) . . . and answering polls on Watch Crunch typically reminds me that my tastes are usually opposed to what is popular. Just have to be honest with my wallet about that fact less I find myself selling some chunky diver that I never wanted to begin with.

It is being shipped on Monday ❤

You have got white in your eyes too! 😆👊

Great read. It is important to go with what you truly want in this hobby. Sometimes people act like a fellow watch collector will bust down their door one day and judge their collection when in reality no one knows or cares what’s on your wrist, maybe once in a blue moon someone may recognize and complement your watch

FOMO is real. Glad you were able to resist its alluring melody and get what you actually wanted.

·

Geez! I wish you would have said something before all of the ex-wife drama.

·

I completely agree. The FP Journe Chronometre Bleu is so much nicer than the Chronometre Sovereign. You should stand your ground and get the Bleu.

·

Nice save! Hard at the time, but happy and chill when you arrived at the right decision

Pics when you get it!! 😃

·

Well said and wise words.

If Blue was always available and you have always liked it better, I'm having a difficult time understanding why you would have even asked about a sold out White.

I can see this anecdote being more helpful if Blue was sold out & White was the only one available.

Hi UnholiestJedi,

I asked about the White because I really did like it, and was simply curious when it might be back in stock. Plus, what I did not put in the original very long posting is that the white had some blue in it as well, but white was obviously the main color.
