Would you share?

Basically a question about expanding your watch wearing experience with people you know and/or trust. Would you share your watch with someone if they shared theirs with you?

Yeah, totally. I would totally share my watches with my friends and family.

Somebody put it perfectly, saying, “If you can’t afford to lose or have your toys break, you can’t afford your toys.” Like many things in our lives, our watches are nothing more than toys!

·

Absolutely. There are plenty of watches I have no plans to own but would love to try wearing. If someone I know and trust wanted to do a temporary swap, I’d be all for it.

·

If I had friends, I totally would have to vet them first. I wouldn’t trust anyone who willingly says they want to be friends with me.

·

Definitely

·

I'd happily share my F91W with anyone who wanted to share their Speedy with me 😁

·

Yes, for sure. I used to share my cars among my friends for a while. A watch is nothing in comparison.

·

Yes if only some of my friends or family gave a 💩 .

most think this obsession is ridiculous but I’ll keep trying.

im sending a bunch of watches that don’t get much wrist time to my nephews hoping to inspire some newbies…

·

Yes, my wife raids my collection to supplement hers, and I have gifted other family and friends watches in my collection that they have admired. I gave one brother my Seiko Presage Cocktail SSA343J1 when he told me he loved the ice blue dial, and another brother my Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Land GMT BJ7086-06E when he told me it would be perfect for his new job which requires travel throughout the US for emergency disaster relief.

Not one person I know gives a crap about watches.

So no'

There's no rule for this - do you trust the person or not? It's that simple 😊 If sharing makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, do what makes you happy!

True. Would you share one watch to get access to 11 others of equal value?

·

That is interesting and a variation of what I am talking about. Instead in this case everyone pitches in and gets 12 watches, different and then shares.

Sounds like a good deal to me haha

·

It depends on the level of trust, but in general no. I guess I generally don’t like to share things with people.

·

My Vintage Watches, no 😊.

I've shared my OW P-104 with a co-worker. I just feel people in general do not understand that a Vintage Watch is of a certain age and must be treated as such.

I once lent one to a friend that had never seen a mechanical sweep of the seconds hand and, while in awe, he started tapping on the crystal 😬😤😡...

·

I wouldn't feel comfortable with it mainly for the reasons that  @chronotriggered mentioned,  but it would depend on the situation and person involved.

·

My husband used to let our teenage daughter wear one of his old automatic Rotary watches at the weekend. She literally didn't move enough to keep it wound 🙄

My husband and I would share in theory, but we both tend to wear our nicest watches on bracelets sized for us and can't be bothered changing the strap.

·

i dont think so, what if they scratch or ding the watch? i would be very upset. lol

·

No. Same goes for my hats, sunglasses and sneakers.

·

never. Never ever ever ever ever. 😁

That certainly is an issue. One could only engage in this if one recognized that the watches will be worn regularly and that the trusted participants would take only basic care of the watch, expecting normal wear and tear. (I rotate watches regularly and still find scratches on my new pieces despite babying them as much as I can.  Insurance would have to take care of the rest. So, if you have a highly sentimental piece it is not the one you would share. However if you wanted that new Tudor or Zenith or Ming you would buy it, put it in the rotation and know that when it goes through the rotation it will be a worn watch...afterall it could be worn most days over the 12 month period of time. You on the other hand would have over that same period of time  the opportunity to wear 11 other similarly valued watches over that same period of time.  So your one watch becomes a 12 watch rotation. If a watch was lost, stolen or massively damaged then the insurance would pay to replace it.

Would share most of mine. Except my Longines Spirit - no chance in hell I would share that one. It'ssss my precioussss.

Would you purchase a watch to include in this? So lets say you spend 2K on a watch. That 2K would allow you to wear the watch for a month and 11 other watches for 11 other months.

The thought process is include people you trust and get insurance. Do this as an organization so that people in the organization share in the opportunity and risk. So for example, one watch goes missing everyone looses.

I’ve been daily wearing my Deepsea for almost a year now and I still don’t have a visible scratch on the clasp. Nor on the rest of the bracelet or anywhere on the case, for that matter.

I don’t know anyone more anal than me, so, no, I would not share.

Understand...that is a big issue with sharing. Would you be able to adjust your thinking, knowing that you can access 12 watches for the price of one (and scratches)?

So would you be interested in a 12 watch swap? 12 people, 12 watches rotated once a month. Same value for each, within 15%. So range could be $500 - $575.  Or 2K - $2,300.

You effectively would become a share holder in a 12 watch collection. Your cost of entry is the cost of a watch, plus insurance.

I’ve had well-meaning people try my watch on in front of me while I watched in horror them slapping my watch on their wrist and having it collide with the watch that’s already on their wrist🤦‍♀️Also had someone drop my watch right in front of me onto the table as they were handling it. And both of these incidents were at watch meetups, so, in theory, those people had been “vetted”.

I’ve also had bad experiences as a child—when my stuff was damaged by others, I was always told that it was my fault that I didn’t prevent others from having access to it.

I am almost entirely certain that I will not change my thinking on this. Not that I don’t share anything I own, however! I share things that have no sentimental value to me and that don’t cost too much to replace. Also stuff that becomes obsolete really quickly, like smartphones or other “disposable” consumables. And food, time, company, pain, etc.

Fog is right - I can't find anyone who cares, either. So this is one that will never come up, I'm sure.

It does seem there are a lot of people here that care about watches.
