Tantalum vs other precious metals

I only found out about tantalum watches a few months ago. How do you think this rare, quirky precious metal stacks up against the classics?

Nope not for me. Steel or Titanium at a push.

No matter how much money I may end up having, I still think stainless steel is the best choice for just about anything.

Naa, solid black titanium is clearly better... And I prefer black ceramic, too... Then come solid classic gold and then high quality stainless steel...

But white gold is idiotic, standard titanium is very gray and purple tinted or very rose gold is too strange.

Tantalum has a really interesting grey color to it, and I love the look. But, it is so hard to machine that few want to work with it. It is not a matter of hardness but of how it sticks to the machining tools and ruins them. But if I had a choice between Tantalum or steel or titanium I would take Tantalum. Gold is such a different look that they do not compare much.

I'd love to see a watch made of polished tungsten carbide. It would be difficult to make, and heavy, to be sure, but it would look good forever.

I disagree about white gold… I think it‘s a super cool and understated material. In person it is very bright almost white at times and the added weight is nice. Especially on a dress watch that otherwise weighs almost nothing. And since I buy watches for myself and not to show off I like that nobody notices at a glance I‘m wearing a gold watch.

I can totally see the point about it being too similar to steel though!

As someone with an underlying interest in chemistry, I'd love nothing more than to have crazy materials in watches. Tungsten carbide will be awesome; you'll basically have a bludgeon on your wrist.

Great, add another one to the "list." 😂

The Tiger Eye dial is sublime.

Stainless steel over precious metals, but if I had the dough, it’d be the Day-date fluted bezel platinum or the Daytona platinum with the Restoration Hardware colors. And it’d be my daily beater. Ain’t I a dreamer. 🤪

That's... a little frightening.
