Omega Speedmaster 57 (advice on previous references)

Hi there!

Recently, I have been looking to get an omega into my collection but none of their offerings really interest me. However, the Speedmaster 57 when it was announced really caught my attention.

They've been hard to find until only recently. Though the current price is quite high than what I am prepared to pay for one.

So I decided to look through the previous models of the Speedmaster 57.

Are there any specific references I should be looking to get or should be avoiding? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

The Speedmaster 57 is certainly a great line. Though they do get very expensive. This would be my personal favorite. It's a 331.10

I owned the previous generation Speedmaster '57. Personally, I would not go that route. For my wrist size of 6.75" / 17cm, it was way too big in terms of dial diameter, lug-to-lug, and thickness. I sold the watch off a few months after purchasing.

The new model is sized perfectly. Smaller dial, smaller lug-to-lug, thinner.

The new model has lot of good improvements. A different movement, better proportions and especially thinner, better bracelet, quick adjust clasp.

The models are available easily now and you probably can get a slight discount.

Agreed, the older 57 reference is, quite chunky and huge, the new 57 while not a small watch is still much more wearable for my wrist 👍🏼

The 1957 Trilogy edition from about 10 years ago is an awesome reference! https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-speedmaster-57-chronograph-38-6-mm-31110393001001

The older 57s are significantly different. Wider, taller, older movement. Nothing wrong with them, but I wouldn’t compare them apples to apples.

I’m curious about this line of your post. If none of their models interest you, why do you want an Omega? Do you want it for the name? Are you filling a gap in your collection? Do you feel left out by the hype surrounding the brand?

I mean, aren’t there brands that have models that you are interested in, models that you love? Why concentrate on a brand that doesn’t make something interesting to you?

It leads me to question why you are asking about the 57. Is it just because you want an Omega and this is the least objectionable model? Except you don’t even know which model of 57 you like either, hence the reason for this post.

It seems to me an odd way of choosing a watch and I’d love to understand the thought process better.

Oh, I’ve been enamored with omega for quite awhile as growing up, I always remember my dad wearing his omega Seamaster a lot. He owned 2 omegas and that’s what kinda got me into watches. So omega as a brand always has that sentimental feeling to me.

It’s just with their current collection, none of their offerings really speak to me until this one. I’m not a fan of the regular speed master or any of the Seamaster. I kinda like the aqua terra but not enough to own one I guess?

I have looked at vintage omegas and the ones that my dad has, but I thought of getting something that’s current. But also while looking up the history of the speed master 57, I came across some interesting models that was exclusive to where I live Japan. Like this speedmaster from 1995. I think I like the speedmaster with the steel tachymeter.

Thanks. Makes sense.

I like a slight twist on the straight traditional. This is my 17-year-old '57 Broad Arrow. Ref: 321.90.42.50.13.001. I love the 'richness' of the brown dial & gold accents.

I see. My local watches of switzerland store still does not have them in stock, maybe ill try to head to an omega boutique when I have the time. However, Omega prices have been increasing by quite a lot recently. The Speedmaster 57 is now the same price as a Zenith chronomaster. So I am still weighing my options on going vintage or current. I have found an old speedmaster from 1995 that was for the Japan market that I might get to scratch this itch.

What I have noticed is that for the omega speedmaster line, i am really liking the models with the steel tachymeter.

yup! after checking the thickness of previous models, the new 57 looks to be a winner in size and proportions.
