Can a Name put you off?

Does anyone else have this issue? It seems to be an issue with up and coming brands but I find I can get put off a watch by its name or it’s logo! Take Helm for example. I have no idea how good their watches are, the one photographed here looks pretty decent but the name gets me! Being in my 40’s Helm was a term you used as a teenager if someone was an idiot as in “Shut up you helm”! As in, you Helmet, as in, the tip of your penis, as in, you Dick! So naturally that puts me off this brand. That an MAEN which just makes me think MEN! How about you guys? Do you guys have any brands that put you off with their logo or name??

The #orient logo prominently branded on the dial stops me from getting one. They have a few without the logo like the Orient Star line, but those are a bit pricey. Also the new Seiko 5 logo and the #yema Superman, because I don't like superman.

·

Some people love that orient Logo, yeah the Superman is a random name for a watch. I’m not a fan of the locking mechanism on the bezel, I feel like it ruins the symmetry on the bezel!

·

Yup, agree on Helm. There's lots.

Horage, couldn't have been a native English speaker thought that up!

Most Chinese brand names are ridiculous.

A lot of microbrands, Mean, Phoibos & Zelos for example.

Names too, Christopher Ward, Frederique Constant etc.

·

To be fair… what does Rolex, Omega, Seiko mean, besides having been at it longer 🤷

·

Christopher Ward’s name and logo both put off a brand I think I would otherwise like. Frederique Constant doesn’t bother me as much for some reason. Can’t figure out the logic on that one.

I’m in my 40s and I’ve never heard Helm used that way. But now I think I’ll start using it. lol. Helm makes me think of nautical. Like the helm of a ship.

Never heard that use for helm, but I'm also not from the UK. To me, being from the US, it speaks of commanding and/or knights/soldiering. So that's 🤣.

And this has come up before, but for me....

I am not into Erebus.

They are good watches, albeit no drilled lugs. (And I have three Helms 😆).

Buuuuut...

I can't bring myself to wear a watch, that is emblazoned with the single biggest jerk, and supremely evil character Erebus, from the Word Bearers Legion in Warhammer40K.

He is THE reason the setting is messed up AND is a pretty sick and twisted character in his own right....and the books have made him that much worse.

So for good or ill, prolly won't be ordering one anytime soon. YMMV.

Addiesdive. Or however you spell it. Nice looking watch dial. Terrible name and logo.

Erebus. Went with the Terror to find the Nortwest passage.

·

Skmei, Bermuda, and Tactical Frog

·

Absolutely put off by brand names and or logos. Orient logo looks like Philip Morris, Seiko 5 logo looks like some variation of Superman. But the one that gets me the most is Casio Oceanus. All I see is ‘anus’ on the dial and while a great watch it’s one I would have bought years ago if not for ‘anus’. Why couldn’t they call it the Oceanic?

·

Halios for me, I love their watches- it just sounds like halitosis to me. Reminds me of a guy I went to high school with who had the worst breath and his name was Hal. I’m sure you can figure out what everyone called him.

Agreed on Traska. They have some interesting watches but the brand name and logo is a turn-off to me. Oddly enough, I have no problem with the Formex name and logo.

Man. I forgot Addiesdive. You’re right, horrible name and logo. Decent looking watches and great for modding though.

·

Formex sounds like a condom brand.

The Orient logo looks like it's trying too hard to be regal.

The Addiesdive name is unappealing and the logo looks like a fat Martian, because the logo does not translate well to small spaces:

Actual logo:

What I see on the watch dial:

Image

SKMEI...I mean, come on, what is that?

RabbitGoo...not kidding, another Chinese brand.

Mystery Code...just no.

The Tudor shield face: "Hey guys, let's go get so me pizza and ice cream!"

This would be much better, although haters of Christians will be up in arms about it:

I actually agree with you on CW, even though I have 5 of them. 😆How did I miss that?

·

A helm is the tiller or wheel used to steer a ship. Completely appropriate for a dive watch.

Yelp star rating 🤣

·

Pagani Design, Tactical Frog, Addiesdive, Phoibos (not to mention the octopus logo), Zelos, SKMEI, Christopher Ward, Daniel Wellington..

Superman is also quite a stretch for a watch with no correlation whatsoever with the superhero.

·

To me, Formex sounds like a Trading App, and agreed the majority of Chinese watches and logos are ridiculous. Rado sounds like the medical condition Rabdo. Oh and Dan Henry sounds like the fella at your local pub who always sits at the ends of the bar half drunk trying to bore you with stories of the railway!

·

i think maen sounds like an aliexpress watch and the logo doesn‘t make it any better

To be fair… what does Rolex, Omega, Seiko mean, besides having been at it longer 🤷

Seiko has several positive meanings depending on the Kanji used, for example "exquisite" (which is the original meaning of Seiko when it was rebranded in 1892) and "success". But these days, Seiko is simply written in Katakana.

"Benyar", what the heck does it even mean? Changing it to "Barney" with a purple dinosaur logo - would have been an improvement.

·

Also: Skmei. Solid head scratcher.

Thank you for that. 🙏

But I guess how many know that? So my point being perhaps “Helm” means something to the owner, and same goes for any “name” Also for someone, somewhere, Seiko may mean something negative.

You are not wrong there. I think it is just fun to find out the origins of companies and how original (or not) their naming conventions are.

Totally agreed.

And again, really appreciate to learn the history of the “Seiko” name. ✌️

Yup, but a made up word is fractionally better than the oxymoron "Pagani Design" 🤣🤣

·

Any brand that has a “name + last name” combo as a brand name instantly puts me of. Christopher Ward, Frederique Constant,… Just can’t stand it. It’s not just with watches; clothing and fashion brands with similar names put me off, too. Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss,… Don’t know why, though.

Just for the record: PD is actually starting to come up with "originals". I say this while fully aware of how subjective the word is in the watch world.
