I was gifted an Armitron whilst in the 5th grade. Afterwards, I became a wristwatch nerd, going so far as to stay up late watching Shop NBC selling watches from the likes of Invicta, Croton, etc. Learned a lot from hosts Jim Skelton, Tim Temple, Michael Davis, and others.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
At the age of 13, I received an Armitron diver style watch for my birthday. A few years ago, I learned Armitron was started by a Jewish man, and being Jewish myself, I find that to be cool.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
I recently restored a neo-vintage Movado from the 90s. My step father had one just like it, and about two years ago, I decided I wanted to find it. Thankfully, I found a few examples online, all of which were in bad shape. After getting it home, I aligned and cleaned dial, installed a new battery, and polished it up. It now looks fantastic.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Learn all you can about the basics. Let YouTube, articles, and forums guide you. Don’t be a watch snob. Higher prices doesn’t always equate to a better watch. Good specs on paper doesn’t always translate to a good watch IRL. Swiss Made is overrated, and doesn’t mean 100% Swiss in most cases. Same applies to “Made In Japan,” where a lot of JDM watches have Chinese parts, or parts sourced from other Asian countries.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Tudor. Rolex.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Factory iced out Rolex GMT with rubies, diamonds, and sapphires making up the bezel. A more lofty grail: Rolex 6536 Submariner red depth small crown; or, a Tudor 7922 Submariner.
