I aspire to build a 3 watch collection with Diver/Field/Dress as my "end game" goal. In my opinion, it's the perfect balance to cover your basis and consolidate your budget on quality pieces, without falling into the typical pitfalls of "watch collecting" aka buying addiction and hoarding.
However, at the moment I feel like I'm still experimenting and refining my tastes and not exactly ready to pick a definitive 3 watch collection. Thankfully, watch modding lets me experiment with a variety of designs at a low cost to get there.
The first tier would include watches in the price range from 20€ to 1500€, the second from 1500€ to 5000€. At the end, there will be no more watches than 11 (the last one will be a tier 3 in my preferred category).
The only watches I owned during my marriage were cheap and unremarkable. And it’s an amicable divorce anyhow. But it’s a fair point in general. I just like the collection as much as the xollevting.

5 to 10 is the sweet spot imo . . . and perhaps 8 or 9 . . . that's a nice full box of 7 + 1 or 8 +1. Just enough to regularly rotate + some wiggle room for special pieces/color variations/the odd ball etc.
Nightstand Daily Watch Sub 2k (like a Nomos Club, Alpinist, Oris Big Crown)
Case:
Versatile Sport Watch (no bezel) like Grand Seiko or Omega Globemaster or Rolex OP
Dress Watch (ideally also verstaile but can be dressed up for formal events) -- JLC Reverso or Cartier Tank
Travel Watch with GMT or Worldtimer Function that also won't get your robbed/your hand chopped off (this could also be a Micro love slot) -- Farer or Christopher Ward
Chronograph or Other Complication - Zenith or Speedmaster
Dive Watch or something with higher WR (this could be an aesthetic and/or a utilitarian choice depending on your life) - GO SeaQ on the high end or something like a Seiko 5 on the low end
Artisan Dial/Handmade/Dial showstopper -- think AnOrdain or Kurono Grand series
Vintage or Good Vintage Callback -- the watch that oozes history and maybe took you a while to hunt for -- think Universal Geneve or a rare vintage Omega
Wearable Higher Horology and/or precious metal (something you'll actually wear and won't feel weird about due to price or showiness) -- think lower level Lange, Vacheron, Glashutte Original

I’m a 1 brand and 1 kind of watch collector (this could change as I get a few more watches) I’m on 5 at min and looking at getting to 8.
1. beater digital g-shock
2. Dress watch
3. Chronograph
4. Pilot
5. Diver
2 of these options aren’t collections, and 1 is a selection. Only 1 option could class as a collection.

I agree but some people truly have only one
I agree but some people truly have only one
And that’s fine, but it’s not a collection, it’s a watch
My 10-watch collection basically has a variety of colors, brands, and prices that cover:
Luxury
Dress
Moonphase/Calendar
Tank
Spring Drive 😉
Diver
GMT/Worldtimer
Chrono/Tachymeter
Pilot
GADA
[and a bonus pocket watch]
And that’s fine, but it’s not a collection, it’s a watch
Fair but that’s the term they all use when referring to having one watch somehow it’s a “collection”
I have about 50 and it’s too many. I’d say 20 would be about right except how do I choose??????

Kinda funny but at first I was going to do 20-50 on the last option

And they are incorrect. I have a pair of shoes on today, at no point do I refer to today’s shoe collection.

We are in agreement I hope you see lol :) it is just a standard term that people adhere to and it made sense in this context

I would like a collection of bananas please - just one
What about 80?
I'm on 9 and it's probably too many as I now work at home permanently so they get limited wear!
TAG Heuer Monaco
Breitling Superocean Heritage
TAG Heuer Monza
Longines Conquest VHP GMT
Rado Diastar
Ball Ohio Engineer Moonphase
Ikepod Duopod
Montblanc Summit 2+
Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000D
Top 2 are keepers, bottom 3 are technically beaters, others are likely to get flipped one day, although I have had the Monza for some time now!
My aim are 5 categories in two tiers:
Beater
Dress
Diver
Chrono
GMT
The first tier would include watches in the price range from 20€ to 1500€, the second from 1500€ to 5000€. At the end, there will be no more watches than 11 (the last one will be a tier 3 in my preferred category).
Ugh... I definitely have too many but thinning the herd is like picking your favorite child...
4: dress, beater, GMT, vintage
Alexander shorokhoff swan lake, G-Shock,Tudor BB pro, vintage patek ap vacheron or omega

Divorce
It's 10 core watches for me with a few affordables on the side.
Look, I’m already at 30…..so ya….
This only works if G shocks and Apple Watch don’t count

You won IMO
E. As many as you can afford…and still be married 😉

A peek into my daughter’s clothes closet is looking at a shoe collection 😂
As many as are perfect for you. Entirely subjective
TRying to keep myself under 100 here...
My choice is omega seamaster 300 love it
