Help! Should I get the watch or not?

I've been eyeballing a royal oak for as long as I can remember. Two years of talks with the boutique has led me to being offered a code 1159, which I liked but not at the asking price (thus it was rejected). Now, I've been offered this blue ceramic offshore which has been on my wishlist and I like - something the boutique seems to have considered in offering it to me.

That being said, the price is a few steps above my usual comfort level. While I am fortunate to be able to afford it, and my wife feels it is something that I deserve, I just can't quite wrap my head around the sum. I hate to admit it, but another consideration is that rejecting a second watch would lead to the AP door being closed to me forever. I can't quite pinpoint if I want the watch for it's own merits (which is usually my only consideration when adding to my collection), or if I'm seduced by the thought of this being the "gateway drug" and entry point to my actual grail (a full gold royal oak chronograph).

What do fellow crunchers suggest in his situation?

Yolo, take it and enjoy the watch (possibly selling it at sizeable loss if I don't?)

Or say no and continue the wait for the grail (possibly regretting rejecting a watch I genuinely like and have room for in the collection?)

Continue to wait for your grail. It will not make you as happy as the watch you really want.

·

Go back to the AD, spend some time with it. See how it looks. If it's right for you, you'll know it.

·

Buy it and enjoy it until you can replace it with the gold.

·

So if you buy the rescue dog you are guaranteed the watch you desire? Or do they laugh as you drive off?

·

Yolo just buy it

·

We can’t make that decision for ya because everyone has a different situation.

All I can say is, wow! This Offshore looks good!

I root for ya either way- Cheers

Stay strong and hold out for the one you want. Do not fall for the evil that is watch temptation

If you really want it that much and it’s not putting you in financial difficulty, and as you’ve got the wife’s blessing that’s confirmation of the fact, I’d say get it considering how much you seem to like it. Of course I’m probably being heavily influenced by how nice that looks and I’m a sucker for blue.

·

Sounds like your gut is telling you "don't get it."

·

Definitely wait. If possible I’d go in person to try it on again before making the decision and then explain to the sales associate that although you love it, you’d rather give someone else the opportunity to get their grail while you continue to wait for the one you truly want. I can’t imagine you getting black listed for turning down a watch you don’t want when you’re being open and honest.

P.S. if you truly wanted it, this would be a NWA post and not asking WatchCrunch post 😅

What’s holding you back? You say the initial cost is bearable, so that’s not a blocker. You mention resale value, but these trade above retail on the secondary market, so that’s shouldn’t stop you. So looks like financial risk isn’t the issue. At which point, the only thing stopping you is that you don’t like the watch, which feels like the real root of your discomfort. Normally, I’d say that’s where you can stop in your deliberations: don’t like it, don’t buy it. But in this mad world of waitlists and games, the fact that this is your ticket to a grail leaves me to suggest: buy it, you’ve nothing to loose. If resale for the piece was trash, and your budget was being stretched to the max, the answer would be “hell no”. But these aren’t an issue, so don’t fret. I wish the world of watches didn’t have the nonsense of waitlists and AD games, but it’s the world we live in. Chase your dreams, one complicated watch at a time.

Buy it and enjoy it for what it is. If you can't live with the ceramic version then you are going to enjoy the chase of gold more than the grail you think you want.

·

Reality is if you are looking for a full gold chronograph this is a far reach from that. Suppose you also have to ask the qestion, if the full gold came in 3 months after this how would you feel about that from a financial standpoint. It’s a cool watch but the tone of your post points towards you already knowing deep down that it’s not what you’re after.

·

100% buy that watch! Worst case scenario you end up reselling it. Best case you love it AND you get the call for your grail down the road.

·

For that much money, I would pay attention to your hesitation. Wait for what you really, really want. And if that boutique black lists you then you can tell them I said to knock it off. Always works.

·

Thanks, everyone, for the input!

I think I will go give it another test-run at the boutique and make a decision.

·

@Platinumbyte also, seperate point but on the gold chronograph are you looking to go yellow or rose? I love the standard 39mm RO in rose 😍
