The Selling all watches….keeping three, dilemma

The Selling all watches….keeping three, dilemma.

Every now and then, I seem to have an epiphany moment. I look down at my wrist, see the time on whatever of my watches I'm wearing, and think to myself "What's the fuss about, it tells the time I only need one?"

I then decide that I will sell all my watches, bar three, one for best, one for daily wear, and one for work which I'm not too bothered about bashing about. The current trio of lucky winners would be my Rolex Sub, a Ball Engineer 111 Marvelight and A Citizen World time GMT………… So far so good. I then begin totting up in my head how much extra cash the liberation of my ten other watches would bring me, mmmm ……..a nice holiday and spends. Then, and it always happens, I look in my watch box…………"Oh…I can't get rid of my Alpnist no way…or the Doxa Sub, so, I'll just keep them as well. One by one the little darlings escape the purge, and within a day or so to relieve the stress of it all, and the narrow escape, I buy another watch.

Does this ring bells with anyone?

Has anyone followed through with the three watch policy ?

Any advice?

i always strick with my 6 watch rules. if i want to buy another one, i should sell one of my collection. my advice is you should sell whatever piece that dont bring you joy or excitement, and 3 isnt really an exact number i think. if want to keep 4 or 5 thats perfectly fine. sometimes in the future when you like another watch you always can buy another one

I was 2 + a GShock for a couple of years.  I've added a couple, but I feel good at about 5.

Nobody needs more than 1 or maybe 2...

Yeah - don’t. You’re already struggling.

Maybe stop buying but genuinely keep ones you click with and shift those you don’t, regardless how many you are left with. Wear all of your watches on rotation if possible to ensure you are correct with your feelings. If you over cook it, you’ll get sellers remorse and end up buying them back or something similar and end up back here.

Stop thinking about them and just wear them, all will become clear.

I have done it.  Of the seven I had, one died and Tissot said it couldn’t be repaired, I sold one and gave two away to family members, leaving one for dress, one for everyday and one tool watch.  No regrets.

One watch for more formal occasions, one watch for near/in water activities, one watch for travelling, one beater, and one daily driver to fill in the cracks…

Sell, or keep for sentimental value, as you get into positions to upgrade!

I'm going against the grain a little here, but I'm just starting out, and have committed to really modest watches, so my perspective may be different than most.
I've worn just one watch for years, so having five newish watches feels very luxurious and exciting.
I'm going to shoot for a 12-slot watch box, and fill it with mainly Casios, perhaps a vintage Seiko diver, maybe a Moonswatch (need to try one on first) and one that I really love from Brew Watch Co. (the Metric - Retro Dial).
I think the total spend will be well under $2k, and spending that much seems extravagant to me, so I know I'll be happy with what feels like a somewhat diverse collection.
I've never been a 'quantity over quality' guy, but this seems different.
Having a variety of watches that I can enjoy wearing based on mood, activity or event (along with the exciting world of bands!) while not really worrying too much about losing or damaging them just feels right to me.
So, to the OP, I recommend that you keep them all! 👍

I’m getting the drift here now……I think i’ll resist the big sell off ……again.

Thanks for the comments so far, at least there hasn’t been any groundswell of comments along the lines of “sell and be damned”

so far that is……

Ha!  Just teasing you.  You should do whatever you think will be fun.  I mean, it's fun to build up collections.  And it's fun to pare them down.  And it's fun to them build them up again, right?

Why not?

Yes I agree, it’s a continuous process for sure, if I’d kept every watch I’ve ever owned, I would be at 239 now!

That’s good advice cheers
