Chicken foot leather strap!!!

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages...  I bring to you a sight never before seen!  Is it the mysterious Himalayan Yeti?  The famed Lochness Monster?  The blood-sucking Chupacabra of Costa Rica?  No, it is something even more rare and wondrous.  I give to you, the chicken foot leather strap!!!

Image

I commissioned this piece from our very own WatchCrunch member @Jericho (Marco), and I could not in a million years be more pleased with the outcome!  I've already reached out and asked Marco if he'd be wiling to custom make 3 more straps for me!

Image
  • Marco consulted with me upfront extensively to figure out precisely what I was looking for, and given my penchant for something unique / weird, suggested chicken foot leather!
Image
  • We got the dimensions down, and then it came time to choose a backing and stitching - beautiful yellow cow leather and white thread.  Nothing too exotic
Image
  • Then Marco got to work and sized the lengths for an Omega-style deployant clasp
Image
  • Painted sides black

  • Finished product

I can't really find the words! I'm super happy that you liked the result and to see everything come together once fitted on the watch! I feel humbled and super lucky to have found such great people here

That turned out remarkably well. And it’s the perfect level of stealth weird—which I totally f$1k with.

·

Also you are a madman, and I applaud you. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

·

That is so cool - never heard of using chicken feet leather for straps. The result looks awesome!!

For some reason, reading this post made me think of this Far Side cartoon:

Yeah, dude!  It used to be the case that my comic book collecting was my weird thing.  And then, well, it got culturally appropriated by the cool and the good-looking!  I was out at dinner with my wife, and our server was 6'3", blond hair, perfectly trimmed stubble.  I said to him, "Yo, you look like Chris Hemsworth in Thor."  Dude then went off on how much he loved Marvel, how he's watched every movie, how in his spare time between waiting tables and being a volunteer firefighter, he's begun reading the comics...

And I'm thinking to myself, "How dare you???  You can bomb my homeland.  You can take my people's food and bastardize it into General Tso's Chicken.  But, how dare you good-looking, popular people take the last bastion of nerdhood away from me???"

We should have a contest to see who has the weirdest watch strap materials!

PREACH!

This is a regular topic among my D&D group (most of whomst were also my D&D group when we were kids). The stuff that literally drew bullies to us like moths to flame is now the stuff they all love and act like they were into back in 1991. They already took Star Wars, the X-Men, and Dr. Who from me, and I will be DAMNED if they take any more!

Ha! Typically I get alligator leather straps, because I want to get revenge on alligators for all the small dogs that have been eaten on golf courses in Florida. I’m this particular case, this chicken Foot leather strap is for all the victims of bird flu!

·

Having owned hens and chickens myself I applaud you for coming up with that strap idea💡⌚.

It always did look like good textured leather to me, but I never knew quite what to make of it 🤔😂👍.

what's next? Goose? HAHA

Very unusual, love the step by step format 👍 Keep it up!!!

I would love to take credit for the idea, but it was 100% @Jericho's brain wave.  What I love about the material is that it has this incredibly luxurious texture - it's very shiny and waxy feeling, like good crocodile / alligator leather.

As a Chinese-American, what we typically do with chicken feet is make Hong Kong style dim sum out of 'em.  Leather watch straps seems like a higher purpose to me.  :)

That would be cool!  I've heard of people using all sorts of crazy materials, including:

  • Ostrich
  • Stingray
  • Lizard
  • Beaver
  • Python
  • Shark
  • Toad

At some point, I plan to get one of each!  Ha!

I would never have thought Chicken Foot Leather would make such a nice looking strap. I applaud the original thinking :)

Well, again, I think all the kudos go to Marco!  It's certainly a cheaper / more sustainable product than alligator / crocodile leather.  According to this Freakonomics podcast, "The U.S. now exports about 300,000 metric tons of chicken paws every year"!

Can you imagine how much better the world would be if all the rage were chicken foot leather?  Birkin bags made of the stuff would sell for $100k premiums over their croc counterparts.  Chris Harris would wax eloquent over the chicken foot leather interior of the latest Bentley Continental GT.

My 6 year-old feels differently.  She said, in horror, "Wait...  you killed a chicken just for your watch???"

My answer:  "Oh, well... we eat chickens, and typically the feet are thrown away, so really we're just taking the leather off the feet that would have gone to the landfill anyway."

What I really should have said:  "Yes, darling, I would murder a thousand chickens for this watch strap."

Thank you so much!

Custom strap that was crazy affordable too, because Marco is just getting going.  Price and quality...  what more could you ask for?!
