Best Three Watch Collection? [Selling a lot of medium pieces to get a good one]

Hi guys!

Thus is my first post!  Was thinking about my collection the other day and needed some friends to talk through it.

I have like 7 watches and thinking about selling a lot of pieces to get one or two pieces.

Things I want to sell/have sold recently.
1. Seiko SPB151 Willard

2. SKX013

3. SRP777 Turtle

4. Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT

5. Omega X Swatch Smoonwatch Mars

6. Seiko SNK803

Things I want to buy.
1. Seiko SLA043

I really have a lot of stuff I don’t wear too much and have been wanting one piece that I would wear a lot.

It would be part of a 3 watch collection that includes a King Seiko hi beat dress watch and a casioak.

I would tell my partner I wouldn’t buy anymore watches. But we all know that’s probably not true.

Any other ideas for a good everyday watch?  The other one I could think of was the BB58.

cheers!

  • The Tudor bb58 would be really good but for me it just didn't do it enough.  A lot of other people love it.  Hamilton Intramatic panda dial imo is pretty cool, Formex field and Longines master  collection with the moon phase and day/date.

Oh I forgot to mention if it's just a 1 watch collection I'd go with the Grand Seiko sbgm221.  Pure class imo.

I would say a good option would be the Omega Aqua Terra

It looks like you're a Seiko fan!  Why not any of the below?

SARX055 "Baby Snowflake"

If you like the smaller footprint of the BB58, why not something much rarer and unique, like this?

SBGM245, SBGM247 Automatic GMT Watches | GS9 Club | Grand Seiko : GS9 Club | Grand Seiko

I wouldn’t presume to recommend, as I feel watches are very personal and I don’t know you. However, the idea of selling a number of pieces to curate the “perfect collection” of 3 or 4 is something I think about often. The problem is I have the attention span of a squirrel on amphetamines. Every time I start to work through the question, I’m distracted by…oooh shiny!!

The SARX055 is a nice watch, but I don't have a wrist big enough for a 41mm watch. haha.

I have a vintage KS 45-7010 Linen dial with a HiBeat so my KS itch is a bit scratched right now.  I think one day it would be nice to have a SBGW231 as my dressy watch.

Also that GS is pretty interesting.  I do want a GS, but in the $5000 price range, none of the designs really speak to me a lot. I think all of them have a few odd design elements.  Like that watch I don't like that the bezel is fully steel and does not rotate.  I want GS quality but the regular seiko divers talk to me a lot more (which is why the SLA's are interesting to me.). The other one i was looking at is the SBGM271.  I liked it a lot but it sat a bit wierd on my wrists.  Again the curse of a baby wrist.

Thanks for allt he recommendations!

Haha, Yes.  I agree with this.  I spend a lot of money on other shiny things too.  I hope that getting one nicer watch with a lot of details will help me.  I got to the point in my knife collection where I had like 30 pieces and now only carry three things.  So I hope that that "maturity" will carry through to my watch collection if I get the right pieces?

We can only hope :)

Thanks for the reply

I like the Aqua Terra too!  Do you have any experiences with them?  I don't know a lot about the brand because I am newish to watches and have my heart with Seiko.  I have been a bit turned off on the Swiss because of the whole not being able to buy a rolex in a store thing.   haha

Very cool watch!  I love the creme dial.  I am a big fan of the SBGW231 as well.

Unfortunatly I have never owned the Aqua Terra however I have had 3 Omega Seamasters and can honestly say Omega is a fantastic brand, I wouldnt let what’s happening with Rolex put you off Swiss brands as you will miss out on an amazing section of watches, I myself am not happy with the Rolex situation however there are so many other great brands to go for i refuse to pay these inflated prices for Rolex and omega is a great alternative, I think the next Seiko i am going for is SPB143J1 this is a great everyday wearer too 👍

The best thing you could do is go to a city with a bunch of authorized dealers and try a bunch of stuff on. Don’t live near a city? Do some research and then take a vacation to a big city and spend one day of your trip trying on watches. There is no substitute for trying watches on. You may love the specs and looks of a watch and then see it in person and hate it. Or you try it on and it feels weird or doesn’t speak to you. Before buying an expensive watch, try them on. This will also help you figure out what you like more than looking at photos and internet posts.

I see a little bit of regret in your future, your going to pine for a lost love.

·

Owning and wearing a lot of watches is the only way to know what you love.  It's much easier to know before you buy a future watch if you're likely to love based on its size/shape/dial layout if you've owned similar ones before.  So, never worry about having too many!  But at some point, you do find out what you really love.  My policy is: sell any watch you've had for more than a year, don't wear regularly and wouldn't pay to have serviced or replaced if was lost or broken.  And sell it before it needs service so you get something out of it.  (This obviously excludes anything sentimental - if the sentimental attachment is strong, keep it forever - those regrets are not worth living with).  I have 8 in the 'keeper' category and 2 in the process of being sold (and other 6 or so already sold).  Good luck!

·

Have you looked at the Spb143 and related models? Very similar look/style to the Sla043, but come in around the 1k price point. Might be able to save some money and elevate your price range for the third watch.

·

You didn't mention a price, but a couple of upgrades that would not break the bank, Formex Essence, which come in 39 & 43 MM and the Longines Conquest or Hydroconquest.

·

I own, and have owned , a few Aqua Terra models. I kept the oldest chrono of the bunch. I will never sell that piece.  There are a few new models I am eyeing. I also own Grand Seiko. IMO Omega & GS are leading in movements, design, finish etc . Zenith Defy in Titanium is a great piece

Don’t sell the Willard 😢
