Building a Beater Collection Pt 11

After a failed attempt at a Tissot (see below), I started to think about the watches I had. What I liked, what I wished was different, etc.

And I thought about that G-Shock 5610. How it's like the ultimate watch disguising itself as a cheap little nothing. Nothing to see here, folks...

So the GM-2100 here was really appealing. Almost all the same features, but no light has been hidden under a bushel here.

It's got personality to spare. And the design language is executed to the Nth degree on this. So many tiny textures and design choices that all work together. I just stare at this thing, like I do the Flightmaster (these two are my favorites in my collection).

The negative display doesn't bother me, as it was a design choice so the digital area doesn't compete with the analog display for attention. Hit the light and you can see the LCD stuff just fine. Until then, it takes a back seat to the analog hands.

I just love watching those hands move out of the way when you're setting something, and then zipping to whatever new time you set. It's seriously dorky cool fun.

The strap is really comfortable and looks great with the small waffled texture. The watch can dress up or just go with a sweatshirt as I have here.

If I were to change one visual thing about the GM-2100 it's the polished part of the case surrounding the (lovely) brushed bezel. I wish it was matte or brushed as well. But the shine doesn't look cheap or blingy - just not quite as I would have it.

Wishlist for this? If it had solar and Multiband 6 it would be ideal. But this thing keeps hyper-accurate time without atomic sync, and I can afford a battery twice a decade or whatever.

We're about to go to Paris then Vienna. This watch and the Seiko Flightmaster are going with me. Both have multi-time zone functions, both are stylish, both chic. And both watches would be equally good choices if I was going to Hawaii. Or rafting the Colorado River. Or for a weekend in New Orleans.

Just perfect travel companions.

Before I wrap up this series, here's the Tissot that disappointed me:

$140 "Swiss Made" quartz but the Seconds hand never hit any of the indexes. ANY of them. What's the point of "Swiss Made" if my Duro and my Timex are both more accurate watches for a fraction of the price?

Next time, the entire "beater collection" all together, with talk of some possible future additions.
