What are other models that go unloved, but deserve greater appreciation???

So, here's something that has really got me perplexed:  Why is it that there are some models that just go completely unloved?

  • Take Alessandra Ambrosio, for example.  Specs equal to or greater than other models, yet unlike Heidi Klum, she does not host Project Runway.  Nor does she have a talk show, like Tyra Banks's eponymous afternoon program.  She didn't even get to star in "The Valerian" like Cara Delevingne!
  • In the same vein, the Omega Seamaster 300 seems also not to get any love.  Invariably, it's Speedy Tuesday this and Speedy Tuesday that.  Everyone has wrist shots of the SMP300.  Why does the Seamaster 300 get no love?
  • Nobody talks or even knows about the Grand Seiko SBGJ201.  Spring Drive, GMT function, 72-hour power reserve, fully-lumed rotating sapphire bezel enabling 3 time zone tracking, 200M water resistance.  And, yet, nary a peep!

What are other models that go unloved, but deserve greater appreciation???

Speaking of Omega watches that get no love, the Globemaster! It's a DJ/OP, but nicer, and get's zero love in the online watch space.

I really don't understand why it isn't praised more, it meets/exceeds all the specs of the competition.

Let's stay on Omega for a sec. Every time I see this handsome devil (DeVille), I reach for my credit card.

Unlike poor Alessandra, the SM300 does get a bit of love on YouTube, but I think it took folks a long while to warm up to it.  I also think you may need to be a bit of an Omega nut to be willing to spend that much $ on low-bling vintage style diver.

I really like the look of the SBGJ201, but I also think it's too thick for the rest of it's proportions.  My 39.5 Planet Ocean is only 0.4mm thicker, and it's a 600m diver.

·

I love that you’ve just likened the Seamaster 300 to Alessandra Ambrosio. There is not a enough 🔥 emojis on the planet to credit this hot take.

While I can offer no explanation to your original question, I am here for the comment section. 👏

·

It's because Alessandra Ambrosio wears an Aqua Terra. If she wore a Seamaster 300, then they'd both get more love 🤣

·

Man, if any watch had a "fully-lumed rotating sapphire bezel" everyone would be talking about it for sure 😂

Just kidding man. Loved your post 🤛

·

’Cause life is a bitch? It’s hard to get the spotlight for most.

Can’t help you with your specific, interesting, question. But for Seamaster 300 I personally prefer older watches looking modern than the other way around. BB58 is my exception.

·

I agree. But you know what? It's watches like the Seamaster 300 that genuine enthusiasts will appreciate. The more you know, the less you show.

Maybe it’s just the insomnia making me punchy, but that woman has the same dead-eyed stare as Victor from Breaking Bad, and I find it existentially unsettling.

On the other hand, whenever I see a Seamaster 300m, it makes me feel like this:

I don’t think there are ‘unloved’ or models that get no love. It all depends on social factors and what you actually look at. If a watch model was truly ‘unloved’ then I’m sure a manufacturer would pull the piece from it’s catalogue because it wouldn’t make business sense. If a piece is in a catalogue/product range, you can be rest assured that it is getting ’love’.
It all depends on your own standing within the world - if, for example, you were part of Miss Ambrosio’s fan club or involved with Brazilian fashion industry, then I’m sure you would say she gets plenty of ’love’. It is true, as you point out, some things get more attention than others but as watch lovers, isn’t that part of the reason we are here? To find out more about the lesser known things and to learn about the things hidden away by marketing and hype?

In a slightly perverse way, sometimes I quite like the fact that a watch I may own, doesn’t get a lot of attention - it means I get that little corner of the world all to myself or that makes the ‘club’ a little more exclusive

YES!!!  You know, honestly, I've thought about getting the Globemaster Annual Calendar just because I feel like it's so unfair it gets no attention...  and then sanity takes hold again, and I put away my credit card.

You know, that makes a ton of sense.  I'd not thought of it that way - that something that specifically plagiarizes 1957 design is only going to appeal to a tiny, enthusiast audience.  But, even amongst us enthusiasts, I don't think I've ever seen a wrist shot of the model.  Like, I only know of 2 people in the world who have purchased the watch:  1) Me, and 2) IDGuy from YT, who specifically got the 1957 Trilogy Edition.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=059SuvOPueg

With regard to the SBGJ201, have you tried it on in person?  Or ever tried the SBGJ237 or SBGJ239 on in person?  I totally wrote off these watches based on the specs - diameter and thickness - and then tried them on at the boutique, and found them to wear much smaller than their specs would suggest.

That's really interesting:  every watch manufacturer and their dog hard at work releasing "modern interpretations" of their vintage watches.  I wonder if it's a winning strategy, or if people are just sick of it all.

To your point, it's worked wonders for the BB58, but maybe after a while, it's like Star Wars:  "Dude...  yet another movie about the Skywalkers???  Like, literally, there is only one gene line in the entire universe that matters?"

Dude, could you imagine being a model?  All day long, all these F*&^ing people are yelling at you to look into the camera and be good-looking.  It's gotta be soul-destroying.  Maybe she's sitting thinking through the implications of "trapped priors as a basic problem of rationality" and there's no one she can talk to about it - they're all too busy telling her how hot she is!

Fantastic point!  Exactly right!  If it weren't profitable, it wouldn't be in the catalogue.  Brilliant!

And I think they do a woderful job doing so. Longines have a lovely Heritage line. I also like the titanium, no date, version of Spirit. But when already owning the BB58 I felt the roster for retro sportwatches full.

Oh you’re definitely not wrong! That sounds hellish to me. I mean, lots of people thinking I’m swell-looking and wanting to smooch doesn’t sound awful, but I think I’d rather earn my bread by being a fluffer than be really really ridiculously good-looking for a living.

DeVilles never get any love. People want a Seamaster and not a DeVille. People want a Fender Twin Reverb and not a DeVille.* People still know who Brett Michaels is but give no love to C.C. DeVille. Sad!

*I have a Fender DeVille and dig it the most.

I'm part of the SM300 club, I personally think it's one of the best looking divers. I specifically chose it over a no date sub which I had the choice of at the time of purchase, because I actually like the fit feel and look of it more. I even like the fauxtina.

·

In regards to the discussion. I also love me some Alessandra. 👌

Awesome!  Which one did you get?

I absolutely love the bracelet, but I've also found that I really like it on a black crazy horse leather strap.

You know, like all things, I suspect our tastes are fixed before the age of 35.  Like, I've read that apparently, almost no one listens to any music that is released after they turn 35.  Same with new foods.  So, you like that which you liked in your youth.

Based on that, I'm going to assume that you're also middle-aged.  😜

I got mine in 2016. I love the bracelet even though mine is the full polished centre links. I got used to it. However. I mostly wear it on a nato or a spv1 gasgas bones.

The watch has been through alot with me including the birth of my 2 boys.

Yep good deductive reasoning. Strangely i do like new music but do gravitate heavily towards pre 35 releases.
