Wish I could afford Moser but... 🥲

·

Movado - Invicta ..  And Tag ..  I have seen too many Tag's with problems with fit and finish that are just unacceptable for that price point

·

No hate.  Just can't seem to get my mind around buying one of these, given what other competitors offer.

  • Rolex - Why would I ever buy one of these, even at MSRP of $8,950...
Rolex Submariner - The Reference Among Divers' Watches

...when I could get one of these at MSRP of $7,300?

Spring Drive Diver's Watch SBGA461 SBGA463 | GS9 Club | Grand Seiko : GS9 Club | Grand Seiko
  • PP / AP / VC - Why would I ever buy one of these, even at MSRP of $25k...
The Most Prestigious Sports Watch in the World: The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 - THE COLLECTIVE

... when I could get one of these at MSRP of $5,400?

Hands-On Grand Seiko Heritage 44GS 36.5mm Sakura SBGW289 (Price)

What I love about the SBGA463 is that it's eff'ing weird-looking, and nobody has any clue what it is.  All GS - if somebody asks, you just say, "Oh, it's a Seiko," and the other person thinks, "Oh, they got a $100 watch on their wrist."  Stealth wealth FTW!

In my mind, the issue I have with these big Swiss brands is the same issue I have with Ferrari.  Why in the world would I ever buy a Ferrari, when Porsche exists?  In the absence of Porsche, sure, I guess I'd get a Ferrari.  But, given the performance and reliability of vehicles from Stuttgart, just can't see why I would ever do so.

(Actually, I take it back.  I would buy Rolexes, PP, AP, and VC at MSRP, but only so that I could flip them, and then use the proceeds to get my GS's for free.)

·

as of now probably: Invicta and pretty much any “hommage” pieces

and lastly a GS purely because of brand recognition even tho i own several regular seikos

tbh I am coming to the same conclusion , I am starting to just think I might avoid Rolex altogether , I like the explorer 1 and 2 but honestly I just do not identify with the brand and the more research I do the more I prefer tudor and GS

For me rolex is a flex/fashion  brand now.

·

Rolex - They are too common/hyped, and I don't particularly like the look of any of them.

·

Rolex- Have to agree on over hyped, priced and the look of most of um. I kinda feel like Rolex and De Beers diamonds had a few things in common in marketing🤯. Plenty of great spec options out there. To be fully transparent, if money wasn't an option I'd be on a Daytona or two since I'm a huge race fan and well, need I say more!! Speaking of racing anyone going to the Isle of Man TT???

·

Ugh, enough with the Rolex talk.

Let me take this discussion in another direction:

A wrist watch

That's a Kienzle, Germany's oldest clockmaker.  I believe that the German company is defunct and an Italian subsidiary is carrying on the name.  To what end?  Kienzle made great clocks...100 years ago.  Their watches have never been worth much: pin pallet escapements and cheap finishing. I think that they ended making only quartz watches.  This is a typical vintage offering:

Kienzle Markant Watch Online Store, UP TO 58% OFF | www.apmusicales.com

Timex did pin pallet better.

"I know what you did during the war."  That sort of comment was so common in the 1950's and 1960's that it became a joke.  But, Kienzle used Polish slave labor during the war to build mechanisms for Messerschmitt. They were stained in ways that Junghans and Laco were not (heck, Laco was part of Timex for a while, and Kienzle too).

I like owning one of everything.  I just don't want to bother with Kienzle.

So, you're saying that you buy them as an investment?

·

If budget were not an issue, I'd probably stay away from nearly everything I currently own & buy the Rolex's or the PP's or the AP's.

Why? Because the hangups I have about those brands and their snobbery wouldn't exist if I had the means to actually acquire one.

I'd like to think I'm better than that, but I'm human.

·

Bell & Ross. Ugliest type face period.

Any legacy brand resurrected after 2000. Feels like a cash grab.

·

grand seiko: im sure about gs quality but im not into their design, it is just not my cup of tea

hublot: big bang are like overpriced g shock, and any other model has nonalign screw on the front

richard mille: not a fan of big and flashy watch

·

any modern AP or Patek. Treated like absolute trash at the boutique/AD and they don't even have exhibition models to show you. Royal Oak/Code/Nautilus/Aqaunauts look like utter trash and I'd much rather spend my $50,000 and change elsewhere

Tbf to AP, their vintage pieces shout utter class:

·

Hublot for sure those watches are terrible!

·

I feel that Panerai is too easy of an answer, but it's one I have no problem saying never to.

·

Grand Seiko

Why pay $4k for a Seiko?

·

Here's a shocker: After years of being an over-the-top Invicta disdainer, my current least favorite thing in the world is the whole Pagani Design clone thing. I don't care they they actually run at a budget price - design theft is design theft. What's the point?

·

Rolex (I prefer a Tudor), Hublot & all fashion watches…
