Your 4 definitions for a Grail Watch

Thanks to the profound thoughts from you guys in my previous thread, I've put together this video giving my thoughts on the revered Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 and providing 4 possible definitions of a Grail. Did I get it?

Yo!  How did you get one to try on and review???

If that were my watch, and you asked me if you could borrow it for a review...

No No No No No No No GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

At those secondary market prices, it's straight up like asking someone if you can borrow their bank balance for a couple of weeks.

Haha, I asked my bank if I can trade my house for a watch for a fortnight 😆

Nailed it man.

Thanks dude!

Wow great comment.  A lot of watches we respect follow this trend. Enthusiasts don’t like hype watches yet we hype them up ourselves. One immediate watch that comes to mind is the Tag Heuer Monaco. Damn that watch is ugly if you ignore the history.

How did you know that when I said "Exit-Watch" my mind was actually looking for a way to get into wet napkins 😯

·

Moist toilette collecting? I had no idea that was a thing! I think you just changed my life!🥹

I am the hero of my own story… so finally getting my grail doesn’t mean it wasn’t a grail in the first place. In the end, I just hope to gloriously ride off into the sunset. I love that dog.

I thought that you synthesized the discussion very well.  I am relieved that I am not chasing grails. I have goals, just not grails.

(Hard disagree with @KevinK about the Monaco. I am no Heuer fanboy, but that is one of the top five square watches ever made, along with the Zenith Respirator X, Cartier Santos and who knows what.)

I actually quite like the Monaco - in a sea of watches it’s very identifiable by its unique character/design. But maybe I have no taste 😂

One man's idol is another's hot garbage... That's the beauty of our hobby 😅

You are right....Kevin is just not at the place in his journey where he can see the truth as you and I do.

Haha the turntables. Still a young buck!

I can definitely identify with not caring for a watch and suddenly, one day, it's all I can think about! This happened to me with the Seamaster 300M and Rolex GMT Master pepsi. Almost as if I was subconsciously resisting because of the hype and eventually just giving in?

The opposite is true as well. I wanted a no-date Submariner for so long, then I saw one and changed my mind.

I guess it comes down to trying things over time and maturing in your tastes. At the end of the day some watches are really popular for a reason and they have been for decades, even before Instagram and social media distorted and biased our views on material objects.

Current grail: Rolex GMT, lets see how I feel tomorrow....

Wow, I thought I was fickle... Gotta say I had the same reaction to the ceramic sub 😬. Felt cold

No grails for me. As Indy learned, sometimes you just have to let it go.

Being robbed because of wearing a nice watch is more fear than statistics.

https://www.watchcrunch.com/Bobofet/posts/have-you-personally-had-a-watch-stolen-off-of-your-wrist-14072

About 3% (current lifetime) have had a watch stolen off of them in that non-scientific poll. That stinks. It’s horrible.

Were they robbed because they wore a watch, or were they robbed and that happened to include a watch?

Below is a 2017 UK ONS post toting that only 0.3% in England and Wales were robbery victims in 2016. That’s one year. So your chances of getting robbed are scary and higher than they should be, but not as high as people perceive them to be. And it would be hard to make a case that wearing a watch makes you much more of a target to robbery in most areas, because most thieves don’t actually read Hodinkee. I mean they did before Jack Forester left, but now erudite watch thieves are a bit salty.

So I say wear the Nautilus. Insure it. Enjoy it. Bang it against your kid’s stroller. It’s a Patek, so you really bought it for him and not yourself anyhow. And if it gets stolen, enjoy the insurance check and try not to miss the steel 70s sports watch that the thief probably only got $70 for because the pawn broker didn’t like the typeface on the dial.

great video, Max.
I am lucky, that I got my grail. Since it came out I was drawn to the ceramic white Daytona.

Why is it my grail? The Daytona is for me the perfect mix of hype, heritage, beauty. It is so pleasing to look at, the hard contrast, the tri compax subdials, the oyster case and bracelet… It is aesthetic wise for me the most beautiful watch. Another aspect of a grail is for me possibility of getting it. I am realist, so the possibility was low but there!

I just don‘t feel the magic with a Nautilus, Aquanaut, Royal Oak, Datograph or Odysseus… plus I am not a Date window fan.

Finally, I got it in Mid 2021. And it hasn‘t changed. It is still my grail and was not replaced by another. It’s not at my other watches in the display, it’s hidden (if I got robbed). But when I pull it out, the magic is still there! I bought a few watches afterwards, because the hunt will never end ;)

So for me you almost nailed it :) I would choose option one, but with a bit more positivity in really getting it!
