Is Buyers Remorse Inevitable?

You win some, you lose some, that's life. I'd rather have loved and lost than not to have loved at all...

It's a bit embarrassing buy a watch then immediately feel like you might've made a $7k mistake. So come on this emotional rollercoaster with me, and learn from my mistake ๐Ÿ˜ž

Give โ€œzero Fโ€™sโ€ buddy, keep both!

Reall though, it really sounds like the PAM177 pulls at your heart a little more while the PAM915 pulls at your head. If not both, Iโ€™d keep the Ti 177. Your heart is more likely to convince your head over time.

Yeah man, the limbic brain always wins...

Gotta follow your heart, we can't all love the same things. But like Panerai, there's a lot of speedy models to work through. Smell the flowers

Good video. I've been lucky and don't regret any purchase made. But a $7k one has to sting! Thanks again for all you do here.

Hmm yeah the timeless human condition of the grass is always greener... For me I realize that what I am seeking is the hunt rather than the prize. The fast food burger is never as good as my brain promises it will be. I'm sure as a neurologist you understand the whole dopamine affect of getting pleasure from seeing the apple tree and it helping you walk towards it and eat the apple even before getting the apple - the"reward"isn't actually the apple but the journey towards it.

My two cents is enjoy this moment right now - the struggle and debating - that's exactly what is fun about watches. Then consider what kind of life you want at the end of the day and go towards that. For me I would wait and see how my feelings change over the course of say a year with the 195 and see if I can imagine looking back from 5 years in a future where I sold it - how would I feel, would I have any wishes for a more refined, polished version of what I enjoyed for the past 5 years with the 177.

Anyways, always enjoy your content!

Your current watch looks great. I like it in the steel. It's shinier.

ยท

The idea of twins or at least sisters that look so much alike is a fantasy of lore. Keep both/wear both! You dog, you!

ยท

Keep both. Take the depreciation.

ยท

Keep both. They each can have very different use cases.

ยท

Thanks for creating some great motivation. Your video urges me to even more carefully weigh out my next big watch purchase. I've saved about half the funds with a purchase goal of September but have also had a few nagging doubts about both the watch and whether to sell pieces from my collection to raise the other half. I'm humbled that these are first world problems but the anxiety feels real.

BTW my first Valentine's Day with Rebecca was a King's game where she got to see Gretzky play. Not very romantic but she apparently doesn't have buyer's remorse.

I had three Panerai models before settling on my PAM270, which has become my favorite watch over many years. You can not avoid the trial and error aspect of watch collecting, you must go through it.

IMHO not stupid at all though I love my Speedy. I really respect being true to yourself (despite popular opinion) over continuing to be anchored to a piece that could be used as a path to something much more to your liking. Happy hunting!

I'm with you... I've been looking at getting a speedy and even waited for the 3861 to come out. Tried one on and nothing... Maybe the Ed White if I can ever try one on but maybe nothing as well??? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@Max With over 45 years of collecting, I have ran into very similar situations and I am very sure it happens to most of us! With Panerai (correctly pronounced Pun-a-rye) I had the PAM064C La Bomba 1000M limited edition with boxes papers LNIB and then fell out of loving it as I OCD on the Tune Can style case so, I sold it a took a little hit on it to get a PAM024J. There was a bit of a remorse in buying and selling them both. The kicker was I later bought and sold a PAM388 3-day Black Seal Radiomir. I sold it to a retired US Navy Commander and got my money back but damn I regretted doing that. Panerai is a unique brand and so much history pre-1997 when the brand sold to the current owners relocating from Florence to an Italian speaking part of Switzerland. Their factory in Italy then was occupied by Anonimo and later that had new ownership. Panerai were made for the Italian Navy with Rolex movement by a family of the same name. They have had some downturn in very recent years and are recovering. The models with JLC movements are fantastic and the Rattrapante split second chronograph like the PAM214 Radiomir would be the one I get today being less expensive that the 1950 Rattrapante 8 day Luminor. Max I have messaged you, would love to hear back from you with a PM. Take care mate!

watch people tend to be a fickle bunch always between lust and loss and totally unfaithful to their collections.

I'm an advanced antique phongraph collector; and as such I have been studying Thomas Edison for years. My big take away from him is his determination to make things work by trial and error without the assistace of a computer. He was the master of the empirical if you will, and this is the most important aspect of him.

The rest of it, well thats corporate stuff the same then as it is today.

Yeah it's just business... I'm sour on how he treated Tesla

There are no watches in my collection that are truly perfect to my eye or on my wrist. So, I fully understand the buyer remorse thought and Iโ€™ve felt it. However, I think this strategy would wind up with me owning 2 Paneriโ€™s . . . forever. Not that this would be a bad thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seriously! Perfection is an illusion

Great discussion. Not an experience I have had yet but I am relatively new to collecting and adore the research process which I share with @LloydRT . I would however suggest that if you pursued this piece with vigour, having spied her across a smokey room, then, your heart is list to another and unfortunately much like a new hair do a new strap will only take you so far. Maybe move on, but after a short but poignant ceremony at home to appreciate the wisdom this wonderful hobby gives us. Then slap it on C24 etc. and look forward to figuring out what to add next. We love the content and the App. Just awesome. Thank you.

I like the idea of a ceremonial send off ๐Ÿ˜Š

Maybe itโ€™s just me, because I see people writing about buyers remorse regarding watches semi frequently. But I have no second thoughts or regret in the selections I made when creating my collection. Seriously, I have not had any interest in selling or trading any watch in my primary collection. I think that, possibly, my decision to store my collection in a safety deposit box has helped. I only go to exchange watches maybe every 4-6 weeks. The net result is that when I see my watches I really appreciate them all over again, and that seems to keep me from taking them for granted. I donโ€™t know. I just donโ€™t understand the dissatisfaction that a lot of people seem to develop over time and experience with their watches. My advice, store you watches in a bank! Youโ€™ll save way more than the cost of the box if your experience is anything like mine.

ยท

So what watch are you getting? LOL ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can never go go wrong with a Stonex or a Gotrocks. LOL ๐Ÿ˜‚

I feel a lot like this... There are to many watches that fills the eye, even with similar looks, and something in your unconscious makes you choose one over all of the others, nonetheless after a few weeks you start doubting about your picking and then craving another options... I have this issue right now with a Seiko samurai black edition with orange minute hand ... And just a bit later came across a Hamilton Frogman black... Wow, that thing is gorgeous.

ยท

It's the nature of the game. The wows of late stage capitalism and our flawed selfish human brains.

ยท

Hey Max, I will say this. I completely understand that your drawn to the 177! I have owned this watch and wish I still owned it! I currently own just two Pams, a 662 Radiomir, steel and polished 47 mm and the Pam1351, also a titanium case and 44mm. My journey was like this. Bought the 177 new in NYC and it was my first Panerai to own so I was in love with it. A couple of years later I was talked into trading it in for another watch. Really stupid move! Because now I donโ€™t have that watch either. The lesson is to think long and hard before trading up or even sideways. Now I am currently loving both my Pams now but I still miss the 177. But I wonโ€™t be trading any of my watches for it. Iโ€™ll just buy it outright. Btw, the 1351 was at first a replacement for the 177 but also was an update to the 1350, which was a thicker Titanium case. So when the 1351 came out it was a no brainer. The brown sandwich dial blends the old Panerai with the new. Also the updated movement.

ยท

Now youโ€™ve done itโ€”I want to try on a Panerai. And Iโ€™ve got small wrists. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

ยท

I donโ€™t think that if you are truly a watch collector there is ever a time of buyers remorse. Having said that, there is a time you can have spending remorse. Just saying!

ยท

@WatchCrunchOfficial It is easy to full in love and out of love with some watches. Do you what makes you happy. No substitute for happiness. We collectors have had to experiment with some watch models. It is all part of The Journey.
