Should I buy Pelagos 39?

Hey guys,

I am really into watches, Tudor is my favorite brand and recently I got an opportunity to buy a used Tudor Pelagos 39 in perfect condition (worn a couple of times) for $4300 and I'm really hesitating if I should buy it. I'm 20 and this purchase would consume the majority of my savings and I just wonder if the 20-year-old student should buy such an expensive watch. On the other hand, I love it and I am pretty sure that If I had to I could sell it any time and even earn some money on it. What do you think? Should I buy it now?

Definitely not. Plenty of other things you'll need the cash for in the coming years. Buy expensive trinkets after you have a job with a guaranteed income and a place to live.

Yes, you have a point there.

·

No, don’t put yourself at risk financially.

·

It pains me, on a watch site, to tell you no. But no. Unless somebody else is paying, you should save your money. Now me on the other hand, I could uses a Pelagos 39 at that price.

·

C’mon guys he said just his savings and not his checking which he puts most of his funds so he should be ok 😜

Your money your life ! But be financially responsible! It’s great watch and it will be around for a while, hey maybe I’ll sell you mine when the time is right 🍻😉

You are very fortunate to have that amount of money at your age. Use it for whatever you want. But my advice would be to use it on something else. Studying, traveling, sports, adventures, charity…there are so many good things to do in life!

·

Sounds like you are financially responsible. Personally I would use that money to travel. You only need $ to buy a watch but you need $ and time to travel.

·

Have to agree with others here. Without knowing the full financial picture, that is a substantial amount of money to spend, especially at 20. Is your future living situation sorted? Is your transportation sorted? Have you travelled? There are several major expenses to come that it would make sense to invest the cash for now and then pull the trigger when it will not impact your life.

First off, congrats for having the discipline to sock away that much money at your age. I sure the hell wasn’t anywhere as responsible at 20. If the money is earmarked for a celebratory event and not for say, tuition, emergency money, the like…then, reward yourself with the Pelagos, as I’m sure you will love & treasure it. If you have parents, siblings, good friends that could impart sound advice - I’d go that route first. Good luck and let us know the outcome! 🤙❤️🤙

You sound like a sensible and switched on lad. I think you already know the answer to this question.

You’ve got the rest of your life to buy expensive and unnecessary jewellery.

At 19 (damn it’s already 36 years ago😅) I had two years off from university, worked for one year to save 10k, and at 20 I crossed the continent and went to UK to live and travel there for one year.

This experience really developed foundation of my life, including meeting a girl there, who is now my wife.

One thing I wish I had done was to buy and wear a watch that shared my experiences.

If other situations allow, buy a cheaper but proper watch, like Hamilton Kahki or Seiko 5, and go travel.

You will be able to buy luxury watches in the future but time for travelling will be limited.

·

No! Absolutely not.

·

Yes yes you should buy it. I tried one on this weekend and I’ll be adding it to my collection.

·

No! But for a different reason.

If you have all you ducks in a row( that’s old man talk for being financially secure) then march yourself down to the AD and buy it new. You should get the whole new watch experience.

I bought my first nice watch somewhere around that age. A Tag Heuer SEL automatic. I wore it everyday, I got it serviced, I got married in it. I was wearing it when the kids were born. It holds a lot of memories.

I have to qualify. If you have the means to buy cash without it being a financial issue then OK.... maybe. It's a big outlay at 20 even if you drive a Ferrari to class and rent a house at the beach while going to school. I write from experience. I purchased my 1st Roelx on lay away in highschool working at a factory and bakery. Never again, cash only. If I don't have it to spend I don't do it. Great life lesson. That watch will be around

Thank you all for your responses. After considering all your comments I decided to pass this time. I will buy it on the graduation day so it will mean something more to me. Financially speaking, I will use some of that money to invest in my 1st business.

Thanks once again and wish you a great rest of the weekend.

Don’t do it. Wait until you can actually afford it, a reward for your first real job after college, etc. There’s plenty of time. Don’t put yourself in financial difficulties now. Lots of things to learn here, like how to actually best handle money.
