GADA, or Purposeful?

I recently acquired the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra.  I cannot express how happy I am with this stunner!  It's a true go anywhere/do anything watch.  Wearing a suit?  No problem.  Jeans and a tee?  Sure.  Get tossed in the ocean?  Check.  Getting an MRI?  No problem. (ok, not really, but 15,000 gauss is impressive!).

I LOVE this piece. But I recently read that one of the AT's misgivings is that it is trying to be all things to all people.

So my question is - how do you approach your collection?  Do you acquire in purposeful categories?  And for those that do....do you think the AT's charm is dulled by trying to be most things to most people?

Curious to hear what you fellow watch nerds think.

Cheers #watchfam!

Kris

PS - I have what I consider purposeful tool watches - Superocean Heritage, Speedy, etc...   But the AT is getting most of the wrist time now.  Ahh, the honeymoon phase!!

I tend to acquire watches that appeal to me, and not really based on any specific categories. I currently have several Omegas in my collection, but don't have an AT. When I see photos like yours here, it helps build the desire to remedy that.

As someone with a mostly purposeful collection, I sometimes miss not having a watch like the AT that is so versatile, so don’t feel bad about it haha! Great watch.

I think the lack of ‘purpose’ sometimes means it gets less hype from the dedicated collector crowd (want the diver, here’s an SMP; chrono, here’s a Speedy, etc.) - but that doesn’t take anything away from the watch.

·

I've had my Aqua Terra for five or six years now, and it's remained my favorite. I have other more purposeful watches, but the versatility of the AT means that it really feels like "my" watch.

I think the reason it lacks the appeal of some other models is that it doesn't tell a story or tap into a fantasy. It's not about feeling like Jacques Cousteau, Edmund Hillary, or Buzz Aldrin. It's really JUST a watch.

·

What a stunning dial I could look at that all day!

While I like to think of myself as left-brained, my watch acquisitions (and daily selections) tend to be more emotional than purposeful.  Each day I try to pick out a watch based on what I’m wearing, where I’m going, what I’ll be doing, which haven’t I worn recently, etc.  But when I saw your photo, it sealed the deal for today: AT!  Jeans and t-shirt, or suit & tie, the AT looks fantastic.  I don’t see it’s versatility as a liability.  Mine is crazy accurate too.  Oh, and since I have had watches become magnetized before, the AT’s magnetic resistance is not just a theoretical selling point.

She is a beauty!

Such a great response. I wanted to add - mine is crazy accurate as well!  I spent alot of time in a job that required accurate timing - because of that, the USNO Master Clock is still a near daily stop. My AT is running just under +2 seconds/day. Pretty damned accurate!!

Cheers my friend.

The AT might be the ultimate "one watch collection". If it isn't, it has to be close.

BTW- I don't want to be confined to a single watch, but I could certainly find a place to put an AT in the rotation.

That's my general MO as well.  Thank you!

That's a great point - and a good perspective.

And the AT is so versatile.  I'm loving it in every situation these days!

Thanks!

I completely agree!  There are others that fit that bill...I was seriously considering the DJ for that same reason - if I needed one to do it all, which would it be?  Now, I could never have just one. But if one had to part with them all and keep just one piece, the AT could be at the top of most people's list I think.

Thanks!

I used to be in the “need a watch for each category” camp but now find more versatile watches get the most use. My “high end trio” is all the GADA style and I love them all so so much

I’m still in that camp but def look for versatility in each category.  But if I buy in the same category I try make sure it‘s unique enough to me to not overlap.  Your collection is a perfect example of that!

·

I wish I had some strategy mine is more  Spray and Pray.😉

I have a dive watch but hate to swim

i have a gmt but good at adding and subtracting

i have a chrono but don’t need to time anything

i say if it speaks to you THEN it is PERFECT.

embarassingly I probably match my watch to what I’m wearing. lol

Is the red dial a Seiko or Grand Seiko? And what’s the ref? The picture is kinda blurry when enlarged

·

I have some purpose specific watches like my divers but I tend to wear my most versatile watches the most. The AT is on my short list. Now I have to decide between the green dial or the new small seconds...and save the cash to buy it 🤣

It is a red dial, but it is actually a citizen, from their “The Citizen” also known as Chronomaster line or watches. They are JDM models meant to compete with Grand Seiko in Japan. This one is the AQ4020-54Z, which was a limited edition of 200. The AQ4020-54Y is the white dial normal production model

Wow. thats pretty cool. I’ve always liked citizen and i think the quality of their watches is superior to seiko at the 200-1500 price point. If only they made more autos

Agreed, I wish Citizen focused more on their mechanical watchmaking. They have a few The Citizen models using the new mechanical Cal. 0200, but they are all at least $5k. They also own the Campanola brand that makes high end mechanical watches, but they are really not to my taste

·

I used to really want an AT until it dial indices reminded of the sandworm in Dune…

·

I tend to acquire in purposeful categories.  GADA, dress, chronograph, diver, spring drive, etc.  For the next one, I am thinking about a “fun” watch. Maybe something with bright colors or a wild design.

What a beauty of a piece! Mine literally just showed up today, it has been what I have been saving for since I started getting into watches. I love this piece and I think it is a great everyday wear. I have gotten my trio down to this, a super ocean, and a DATEJUST. All I need for any situation! (sorry for the poor photos, been too busy staring at this dial to get the proper camera gear out)

Great photos and a super strong collection!  Welcome to the AT family.  :)   I dig that dial - that thing will be a total strap monster!

All GADA, my purpose is GADA. A watch is a tool to me, not a style piece or a jewellery. I hate when men consider their watches as jewellery.
