Watches can be fun?

Had a bad day? Week? Let me take you away for 10 minutes trying to decide whether a SKMEI (which sounds like a name they give to something up a whales nose ) is worth buying!! I just bought the G Shock Full Metal and was recommended to compare the 2!!!

Oh dear, oh well what do you expect for that price. 😱

Not a patch on the real G that's for sure

·

Nope. Not worth supporting these companies that make cheap "knock offs". I'm gad you smacked it with a golf club. Fun video. I'm subscribed to your channel and like all of your videos. I'm a big fan.

Fun video! You had much better luck with your Skmei than I did when I did a comparison between Skmei and Casio. The light and sound still work on the Skmei, but the display has been blank ever since it fell 10 meters onto asphalt. 🤣

Same same but different is the phrase the Chinese use. A cheap look alike digital would probably work for most anyone not swimming a lot or fighting with a mad golfer. In fairness it didn't need a lot of work to put it back together after it was beaten up. Try that with the Casio.....

“SKMEI” can’t get word out of my head now. “SKMEI”

Hahaha, enjoyed your video and I thought you were going to put the G Shock to the 9 iron as well.

·

Very entertaining and informative. I laughed out loud more than once.

What a mob hit you did on that poor thing! I will say though that I have entertained getting a SKMEI A168 homage in gold tone because its case is metal and has a cool mesh bracelet. I also own a GMW-B5000 and have enjoyed a torrid relationship with it…but ultimately believe it was worth every penny.

Sorry!!

Haha! My wife loves your videos, Russell! She was especially tickled by how you said "SKMEI!" several times. I have to admit, I was quite amused as well! Cheers from Ohio!

If you think Skmei is the worst name for a watch brand ever you have lived a sheltered life. There is Bagelsport, Crrju, Moonbiffy, Wwoor... Even the search engine on AliExpress thinks that Wwoor is a stupid name, and you have to insist that you were really looking for that to find their watches to find them.

Buying a Skmei rarely makes sense. Homage issues aside, the prices are usually too close to make the Skmeis even economical. I once picked up a £10 Skmei design clone of a £20 Casio, and got slightly lucky as the Skmei has a countdown timer and the Casio did not.

I think the watches of the like of Skmei are the example of "affordable, yet competent." It is the kind of watch I would buy if I had absolutely no other choice, or if I had so little money to buy even some of the entry World Hour models from Casio.

I remember buying myself some ultra cheap watch, a Nibosi budget chronograph, I would bet it was less than 10 pounds sterling in my currency (or 60 reais), an used model that I wanted to both test a website's delivery system and to see what the fuss was with these Chinese models. Clone designs are blatant, sometimes the design is generic at best, sometimes it is weird stuff, but the quality is passable and even satisfactory for how little money you invest in it.

The Nibosi I got myself was a "dress chronograph", which means there was a functional chronograph that you could use, but it's accessory at best, since the intention is to look good. A bit subpar if I compared to even my A158, my most basic Casio, and definitely not to the league of my Casio Edifice EF-547D, but considering it cost a weekend's pizza worth to boot, it was a heck of a bargain! Also I joke about how being a watch cheaper than a dinner it has a more clever and elegant chronograph system than my Edifice, that costs almost 10x on retail price 😂

Sometimes it goes for 25 pounds where I live (or 150 reais in Brazilian currency), but if I can pay less than 100 reais (17 pounds), this is a decent deal. And I am happy my mom "stole" this watch from me, since she liked it so much she keeps wearing the little Nibosi constantly. 😉

I think these "ultra-budget" watches from China are a fine deal, actually, way better than the downright scammy clones/"homages" that capitalize on the design, sometimes even the name of the brand, but puts little to no effort to even offer us a watch. I know Skmei does loads of clones of Casio, like how everyone has their own alternative to the Rolex Explorer design, but at least it's one of the rare cases where you can actually find basic quality.

However, like how they are not that ground-breaking, I wouldn't pay too high on them, especially how some retailers try to use these brands (Curren is another example that pops to mind) to have astronomical profits per unit, I have seen some sellers pricing them up to 300 reais! (That's almost 50 pounds!) If you must, then a Chinese brand watch at around the 10 pound mark is a good deal, and a good suggestion if someone wants a budget watch just to look a bit nicer, and considering not everyone has the same budget to spend too high on a watch, at least it is accessible to someone of low-income background.
