Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

My parents started me down this path, with a Timex sport watch for Christmas when I was six. I have always owned watches. I got into collecting seriously about six years ago when my wife got me a Citizen Corso for Christmas, and it reminded me of my first watch and ignited my collecting hobby.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

A Timex Boy's Sports Watch. It was an analog dive style watch.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

My Casio A100 Pac Man is the watch with the most interesting story. My wife hates that watch, even though it was a Christmas gift from her. She bought it as a gag. She had spent some time figuring out a good watch from a favorite brand that I didn't already have, the Bulova Hack, which was a watch I had expressed interest in throughout the summer and fall, but had not yet added to my collection. So, she ran across the A100 Pac Man while she was getting the Hack for me and thought it would be a fun stocking stuffer. Of course, it is the watch that gets far more attention, which she feels is unfair. That is why she hates it. 😁

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Take some time figuring out what you want in your collection. Don't make purchases just because everyone on YouTube is saying this is the next watch you must have. If you get what everyone else says is an essential watch for your collection, you will wind up with a collection of popular watches you never wear. Buy what captures your attention, what you want.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I was really into microbrands like Bertucci, Deep Blue, Spinnaker, Vaer, and especially Islander but that has tapered off, as I have been getting into purchasing vintage watches. Lately, I have been looking at vintage Citizen, Seiko, Casio, Timex, and especially Bulova.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

I have several grails, beginning with a Gerard Perregaux Casquette. This is a reissue of a watch released in the '70s. I would also like to have a vintage Hamilton Pulsar in good working condition. I am currently saving for one of the reissue Pulsar models, and hope to add it by the end of the year. My last grail is my first luxury watch, a Longines Conquest V.H.P., which I hope to add next year. I guess the true grail is the Casquette, and the Pulsar and V.H.P. are long term goals.
