Decisions - Omega Vs Rolex 🤔

I’m torn between the Rolex Explorer 36m / 40m or going for the Omega Seamaster 300M.

I may never get the call for the Rolex, but prices on the after market aren’t bad so I could just get one.

I love both models. I’d be happy to purchase the Omega now, but if I got the Rolex call soon after, I don’t know if I’d have regret 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know spec-for-spec the Omega wins and the true comparison would be the Seamaster Vs Submariner, but my budget is £5-6k.

Anyone been in a similar position? What would your thought process be?

I welcome any thoughts ✌🏼

Both are completely different styles of watches. I’d compare the Explorer with the Aqua Terra and the Seamaster with the Sub.

I know which one I would get for each category.

I’d get the Explorer over the Aqua Terra and the Seamaster over the Sub.

If I would have to spend over 10K for a dive watch I’d always go for the Glashütte SeaQ. For me this is one of the most underrated dive watches out there.

Seamaster looks stunning

Why wait for Rolex, and have to participate in the Rolex Acquisition Game, when Omega offers a watch that is great, out specs the Rolex on performance, is less expensive, and available without the games? I tried to like Rolex, but couldn’t stomach the games. I haven’t looked back, and now am up to four Omegas.

I have both…. But the Explorer is something else- the perfect watch for any occasion. Simplicity, elegance and just badass

·

Rolex…

·

They are both great watches. For me, I think the Rolex Explorer would look better in more formal outfits as compared to rh Seamaster.

Nonetheless please go with your heart.

·

The explorer just feels like it would fit any occasion, any style, any place. That being said the omega stands bold, driving attention and rightfully so, that dial is mesmerizing. Then again 2 different watches, the right answer is always get both 🙃

You shouldn’t think this if you have the access to the explorer. Go for the explorer and after few months get that omega 😇

·

Seamaster

·

I would go explorer…however secondary market prices of the omega are cheap….30% lower than retail compared to the explorer that is slightly higher.

·

Wait for the Rolex. The Omega is beautiful but always available and at a discount. If you buy the Rolex and end up not liking it, you can sell and not lose a dime.

I had a similar problem so after selling the wife you can guess what I did :-)

How big is your wrist?

I have both. Imo, smp300 is a starter watch, often the first good watch one can own - it is accessible, got everything from brand heritage to quality, it is a specs monster. Explorer on the other hand is an exit watch - you've been there done that, seen everything there is to see. You are bored and tired of this insignificant rabbit hole. You've sold all your watches except this one because it is the full package. It gives you everything a watch can. That is just how I feel.

Go for the Rolex, and try a couple ADs so you get a brand new one ... I have a Explorer 39mm mk2 and the 36mm two tone, both awesome...

I had that Omega SMP white dial and sold it at a huge loss, bezel action is horrible, hard to turn, and doesn't even line up, also it's too heavy and unbalanced, and I started to hate the pointless helium valve. It really pissed me off that a $5k dive watch comes with a dive bezel function that barely works, it's insulting. When I sold it I still lost a lot of money even though the AD sold it to me for 18% off right before a price hike.

And I had the bracelet and then bought the rubber strap to see if that would help with the balance/weight issue, but then it just felt really top heavy.

PS I already had a no date Submariner which has a perfection bezel that turns no matter what condition your hand are in, gloves, oily, dirty, doesn't matter... Omega you can't turn unless your hands are slightly moist, not too dry, not too wet, forget gloves.

You need Rolex

Very true thank you.

Yeah I understand this. I’m not a fan of their games. I went into Omega yesterday and feel like I could try on their watches at anytime. Rolex feels intimidating, they want appointments and they often don’t have anything to actually try on!

I tried to like Rolex, I really did. But the only Rolex I really wanted was the palm motif Datejust. At the time Rolex ADs were doing the whole ‘empty case’ thing. I would visit, get looked down at by a smug salesperson, and be given the whole ‘we don’t have any watches but you can get on a waitlist’. But the demeanor wasn’t positive or really inviting. Meanwhile, these watches were listed all over by the grey market scalpers at over double MSRP. Try to tell me these watches weren’t just being sold out the back door! When I looked at it in totality I decided Rolex was a game not worth playing. The watches might be good. But if I can’t buy them legitimately at an AD at MSRP how can I be sure I’m not going to get ripped off with a super clone? There a long history of grey market scalpers going from merely gouging watch enthusiasts to outright ripping off watch enthusiasts. It can take many forms, not just the possibility of getting a fake. Anyone that bought a watch from Timepiece Gentleman has to be fearful they have a watch that was, essentially, stolen. Horology House was another guy that had a good rep and decided to go the scam route. Grey market dealers are way too sketchy for my taste. But the ‘Rolex Situation’ dictates these dramas, and I hate drama.

Here was mine for reference it definitely wears pretty small. After this I had a 36 op with a maxi case that filled out the wrist more. Now I wear a BB54 because I needed the timing bezel, but still wanted an authentic vintage feel

I do like the modest understated look of the 36m

They are very different but both excellent watches. The Explorer might arrive quicker than you think, I only had to wait nine weeks for mine (no purchase history and no silly games), so don't rule it out on perceived availability. Plus, if it's the one you want then it is worth waiting for.

Wow 9 weeks! That’s great going. Was that in Scotland?

Yes.

When did you put your name down exactly? I just did myself in Canada

Nine weeks before 20 November 2023.

I’m an Explorer die-hard, but the Seamaster is a killer watch. Have to go with the Explorer though, especially if you like the 36mm

Regarding other ADs, isn’t it “frowned upon” to go on the list at multiple ADs? I heard they can kick you off if they see you’re registered at multiple ADs.

·

I have both, Black 300M and 40mm Exp1. The movement is noticeably better on the Omega. Otherwise they are so different it's which style do you want.

Then 42mm vs 36mm ?! That's a huge difference

No, I don't buy any of that, most ADs are separate companies they don't talk to each other and there is no official Rolex registry... Honestly the "list" is bullshit, the only way you get watches is if they like you or you are a big spender on other watches and Jewelry, or you get lucky and they have a watch they want to move...

I've bought 3 Rolexes at the AD, one was after calling and asking for a Explorer 39mm, they called me one week later and said they had one, zero spend history, never even went there in my life... Then a year later I walk in to the same AD and talk to the same girl and tell her I want a no date sub which she says is probably a couple years to get, after BSing for a while she disappeared and apparently went to go convince the manager to sell me one, and boom I bought it right then and there

They just have to like you

·

I'd go for the Omega (i own 2 SM divers) but the Rolex is probably a better investment.
