Thinking…should I downsize?

It’s starting to occur to me that there are a plethora of watches that I own that does not get any wrist time. I only have one wrist & can never wear 2 watches at once. So, I’m slowly starting to realize that it may be time to downsize. Are there others here that feel this exact same way?

So, you feel the same way? Do you have a sweet spot that you’re looking for? I’m thinking 6 or 7…

Hey, how do you feel about your current SOTC?

·

I feel the same way and currently are in the process of downsizing, won't buy another watch until I slim my collection down to 5 pieces.

See, that’s great because you at least have an ideal of what sweet spot you want to be at I’m thinking 6 or 7…I just want to be be able to have intimate connections with my time pieces & I’m starting to feel bad when I see watches in my collection that haven’t been on my wrist in months…

Am I using this gif right, @HotWatchChick69 …? 😂

Seriously, though… If you’re thinking of simplifying, simplify! Having less often lets us enjoy what we have more.

·

Yes. I’m trying to upgrade some of the budget mechanicals I have from my earlier years of collecting and settle on a collection of just a few stellar watches. I’m thinking 3-5 ultimately.

Who says you can only wear one at a time?

I'm exactly the same, some people like collecting many, even if they don't wear them and that's fine, everyone is different, maybe some people have 20 and keep them on rotation, but I just can't do that.

Exactly. I’m in need of that intimate connection with my timepieces. It’s too hard when the collection is too oversized…

I can’t either. Plus, everyone have their favorites out of their collections & may have “wrist regret”. That’s when you take a while to decide which watch you’ll wear then instantly feel like you should have wore one of your others. I won’t have that as much once I downsize. Then I’ll be confident in the choices I make when it comes to my rotation…

That’s a very good sweet spot. I‘m thinking I need to be right at 6 or 7...

I've been thinking the same thing for a while now.

I have around 15 watches, some have been passed down to me, others were a gift, some are part of the start of my watch journey (lots of Nixons in there, some I still really love) and the few left are what I call my "forever watches". I keep most of them in a 10 watch watchbox and the rest are in a watchroll, there are some in the watchbox that I haven't worn in a long while and that I honestly don't think I'll want to wear at least for the near future. Most of what I wear these days are my "forever watches" that amount to 3 o 4.

I'm buying a watch briefcase with an 18 watch capacity to keep the watches that I'm putting down for retirement (I'm looking at you Nixon 51-30), I don't plan on selling any of my watches mainly because they are not expensive and hold sentimental value.

I'll also get a new watchbox with a 6 watch capacity, because I think 7 watches is a good numer to keep in rotation (6 in the box and one on the wrist 😜). And also because having a limited number and just buying watches with the intention of it becoming a "forever watch", makes me think reaaaaally hard before deciding to buy one. As I'll buy watches in the future those will go to the watch box and in return some will go down for retirement, early retirement is due when some batterys run out 😂.

The buying roster is always changing haha, but there are a few wacthes that I've been wanting for a long time and if they are still on my mind when I get the funds the decision will be very hard to make

how many watch did you own today? my sweet spot is 6

Yup, of my current 11, I have five strong favorites.  The rest I love too, especially the three my wife gifted me, but picking my five favorites is pretty easy.

I think that’s what I’m going to have to home into. Gravitating toward my favorites & finding loving homes for the rest. Funny thing is none of my watches were gifted to me So, I’m free to sell & gift them away…

You are correct.   But my statement was in humor tho.  Outside the realm of investing,  quality watches can be had very reasonably.   I find that most watches greater than a few hundred dollars might just last a lifetime, and look good doing it.   As such, I can afford to have a few more than otherwise.  But as an investor,  which I am not, one might be limited by funds or opportunities.   Regards.

That’s all true & reasons why I love this community. You all always give me great insight. I love learning of new options & direction I could take from all of you…

& those decisions make you go in circles don’t they. Even once you’ve made the decisions & the watches you chose to part ways with is no longer in your collection will you then have regret down the road? Who knows? These are some of the things that can make watch collecting such a harsh task at times…

That’s where I’m trying to down size to. Around 6 0r 7. That’s the balance I’m seeking. I currently have 22 watches. That’s just too many as I now feel bad when I see watches I haven’t worn in a while…

Yeah' but the circles are mostly about what to buy, because I really don't want to sell any watches, nor do I have wacthes worth selling, thus they will go on retirement (take the ones I don't wear out of rotation), but if I feel like it, I can just take one out of the briefcase haha

·

Sell a few and find out what watch regret feels like.

I won’t have any. I feel extremely secure & set on the ideal of going minimal…

I am in the same boat! Personally I'm trying to narrow my collection to 5 watches. I feel like the more you wear a watch, the more enjoyment you get from it.

·

Pete from NSOW made (another) good video about the different type of collectors. Depending on you belonging to the more dilettante enthusiast crowd  (flashy Zodiac by the swimming pool) or the semi-pro collector club (Ben Clymer wannabe), the number will vary.

I would say a core collection of 4/5 watches works well, not counting Swatch watches, cheap eBay finds / digital Casios and that pocket watch your great-grandpa wore 80 years ago

Exactly what I’ve been typing as a response here. The least you have the more intimate connections you can make with your timepieces…

Bingo, that’s my thoughts about it as well. I think a nice collection can be under 7. That’s a great sweet spot. It ensures that each piece gets shown equal amount of love…

I feel like I am constantly in an inner battle between “I hate the feeling of having such nice watches just sit in a watch box, I should downsize” and “oh look, shiny, I need it”

Yes, it’s extremely hard. Just the thought of selling or gifting a watch away & I wonder what regret could creep in…
