Questions about the Rolex GMT Master II two tone ๐Ÿค”

So my wife (who is not into watches at all) has this idea of us getting matching two tone Rolexes for our 10 yr anniversary (coming in a few years) and she wants a Lady DJ (seems like they only come in 28mm now) and wants me to get the men's ver of course (a two tone DJ).

Thing is I honestly don't care for the DJ 41mm at all (if they made them in 39mm I'd probably consider it, and the 36mm is too small for my tastes) but looking at their other two tone models, my favorite is probably the two tone GMT master II which I do like at 40mm (great size for a tool watch with external bezel).

And due to recent retail price hikes, the DJ is only $2k cheaper, which makes going for the much more functional GMT II a no brainer for me.

Quick question to those owners out there, has the wait time been any less for the GMT II two tone versions versus the more popular 2 color bezel steel variants at Rolex ADs/boutiques?

With that anniversary slowly approaching I want to start mentally road mapping when I should request my go to AD (a multi brand store that includes Rolex and whom I have a decent purchase history including a YM1 I purchased early this year).

I bought a new 126713grnr model last month. I waited about four months. Iโ€™m an established client at the AD but I think that Rolex has ramped up production and demand has decreased. If you look through posts at this forum there have been plenty of โ€œcallsโ€ being received by buyers.

As for the watch, itโ€™s quite special. Itโ€™s a tad bit showy but the mixed metals and black grey bezel tone it down. Although itโ€™s a 40mm watch it wears really nicely and doesnโ€™t feel big at all. I think youโ€™ll be pleased.

Yeah I've worn a 40mm steel GMT II and visually it totally works for me in a way the 41mm DJ does not, plus I far prefer my Grand Seiko 3 hander date watches over a DJ anyway

Have to agree a DJ in 41 just feels wrong proportionally. I bought a 36 and love the size and wearability. Iโ€™m also hunting down a GMT II and honestly canโ€™t decide between Pepsi/sprite or the new black/grey in steel.

Good luck !

There's a great comparison with the 36 and 41 on YouTube. I believe the YouTuber compared the OP. But the said review can be similar to the DJ.

For me ... I agree with you brother ... Get the two tone GMT.

The Datejust 41 is actually 39mm in diameter at the bezel.

But that is arguably beside the point, since you evidently want a GMT. To me that suggests you should get a GMT. If you go to the Rolex store and tell them you are buying two bi-color models I am pretty confident that one of those GRNR will "materialise" somehow in a relatively short period of time. I have seen bi-metal Yacht Masters (40) and Submariners (LB) in the "for sale" sections of the authorised dealer windows, i.e. they rand out of people to call, the GMTs won't be far behind.

ยท

Hmmm .... the DJ is classic and the GMT is next level . Can you get two GMTs or a DJ and GMT combo? It could be a 15 or 20 anniversary gift

$30K for your tenth anniversary? Have you thought about a gold necklace, a card, some flowers, and dinner? If you have to do watches, how about matching Longines--especially if she doesn't know watches.

I mean, you can get out of this for under $5K.

Heck, for one anniversary I got my wife a Gold Plated Tissot:

And you better believe that if I bought it, its under $1k by a wide margin, and she loves it. Especially after I put the red strap on it.

My 2 cents:

Get hers from the grey market. 2 tone DJ in that size is easy to get and probably for less than list.

Get the GMT. Wait is less than a year. But if you need it right away, itโ€™s only about $3k over list now on the grey. Combine that with the savings on the DJ and you may actually make out better getting both on the grey

Iโ€™d go now to the AD if I were you. Talking to m AD recently here in the UAE, it seems that the two toned options are much more obtainable within a shorter time frame (2/5 months), vs the stainless steel ones. But I wouldnโ€™t wait too longโ€ฆyou never know

Fwiw the 41mm DJ two tone actually isn't that much bigger than the 36mm. A YouTuber named Hafiz J Mehmood goes over it

I've tried on a few DJ41 in person, still slightly too large for me and I prefer my 40mm GS 3 handers over most DJ models any day of the week

My 10 yr anniversary is over 3 years away, so no hurry, thanks

Buy the GMT for yourself, have your wife try on a 36mm Datejust. Before the global pandemic shut things down Rolex ads marketed the old gentโ€™s size DJ for the lady clients. I was looking through one of my wifeโ€™s glossy magazines before recycling saw a gorgeous 36 gold Datejust with diamonds on the dial and bezel, that was definitely aimed at the elegant lady client. My sis in law recently received a 36 mm rose gold Patek when she and her hubby celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. I know the watch nerds love 36mm and smaller but I am just sharing the trend that I see. I prefer bigger watches but the 41 mm Datejust seems odd imo.

We did prelims shopping at our AD already, she tried on 28, 32, 36 and preferred the 28, we did our due diligence

The GMT two-tone is ๐Ÿ”ฅ and the obvious choice, imo. Absolute. Fire.

What you have chosen (photos) are more than winderful. Your wife may not know watches but you do. Iโ€™d want my wife to at the least wear what I consider to be perfect for her. Donโ€™t listen to those that say you are spending too muchโ€ฆ If you can why not!? Enjoy and wishing you and your wife many many more!
