First Automatic Watch! I Am Thrilled!

Gentle heads up: this is going to be a long and enthousiastic first post about my recent purchase of the Certina DS Action Diver 38MM in Black.

Since I was old enough to wear a watch, I have always had a watch on my wrist. These were always the fashion watches from brands like Michael Kors, Fossil and so on. I always enjoyed them and switching every now and then from style (bracelet, leather straps, chronograph), it never was serious collecting though. I never really realized untill now that all my previous watches were way to big for my small 6.5 inch / 16.5 cm wrist. All watches were in the range of 42-45MM.

I happen to come across the subreddit r/watches in October 2023 were I saw the most beautiful (and something really ugly as well, but to each its own!) and well crafted mechanical and automatic watches. This is were my passion for watches and horlogy now as well really started! Since then I have learned A LOT about watches, horlogy, brands, jargon, specs and so on; I LOVE IT! Scrolling throught the posts on the r/watches pages and seeing new real watch brands and new models made me look for my first real automatic watch.

After deciding that I wanted a smaller watch, in the range of 34-39MM for my wrist, I decided that my first watch would be a versatile, useful and perfectly looking watch. I was soon submerged in the world of the dive watches. And there is a lot to look at, but long story short: I absolutely fell in love with the Certina DS Action Diver 38MM in Black when I found it online. IT IS JUST PERFECT! I really like the proportions of the dial, the minute- and hourhands are present but not catching all the attention and the simple finishing gets me everytime since I finally have it. The size is just perfect for my wrist and my renewd true taste! This watch wears soo welll and cozy. The microadjustments and divers extension are welcome and nice features, that I didn't even know of before I started my search. The dial and the finishing of it are sublime! When the sun hits it just right, could not fully capture it in the attached pictures, it just shines and makes me gasp (I hope it stays after the 'new-born' phasw, but I guess it will 🙂)! Its simplicity makes me really love this as my first automatic piece, which is just more perfect than I could have imagined when researching it (oh boy how many minutes, hours I have spent watching videos on Youtube about this watch) and finally being able to wear it!

So, to finally conclude; it took me some time to research thoroughly what my first real automatic watch would be and finally being able to buy it, but it is all totally worth it! I will wear it with pride and dignity while also taking care of this beautiful watch! Can't wait to see what my next purchase, expected later this year 😜 , will be, because this has defintely kickstarted my healthy addiction!

Also quick shout-out to this amazing community that I luckily found through the video's of Max on Watch Crunch Youtube channel; this has quickly become my favorite social media platform !

That was the option I tried on at the AD! That is a sick color as well, especially when the sun hits it just perfectly! Enjoy it just as much I will do 😋

Awesome! My first Swiss watch, which is my newest, is also a #certina DS Podium with also a #powermatic80 movement. I love the brand, and your watch is beautiful!

Your post needs a correction though. You said you started a "healthy" addiction. I'm not sure how healthy it could be! 🤪

Beautiful piece of yours as well! Yeah 'healthy' as in I like the time being spend on research and interacting with like minded people. I have made a clear rule to only buy a watch if I have tried it on jn person and if my special savings account 'Watches' has the amount needed for the watch in it! ☺️

·

Had it! It was a great watch! :)

·

Great choice! Love Certina

10 years old and going strong💪

Well, if possible try it on and then you will be as blown away as I was when trying it and still am when wearing it now! The blue is much more shiny than the black I think, especially in the sun.

·

Very nice! 38mm is also my ideal size as my wrist is slightly smaller than yours at 16cm. Congratz on your new watch! Enjoy it in good health!🍻

·

Great choice, now say goodbye to your bank account 🤣

#certina is a really good brand imo, with a number of under appreciated watches - their quality per dollar is up there and they have a solid history in the tool watch market (check out https://www.vintagecertinas.ch/en/home-en/ if you haven’t already).

I bought a DS PH200-m ~ 5yrs ago and I'm 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 attached to it, don't plan on parting with it - ever. I hope you have the same experience.

Look forward to your next buy - something from a smaller brand would be a good pairing. Serica, Nivada Grenchen, Lorier etc. have some cracking watches that'd suit your wrist I reckon - and if there's one piece of (unsolicited) advice I'd offer it's this: 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚. This hobby is a marathon - don't sprint towards what you can afford 𝙣𝙤𝙬, save for what you really want.

That is indeed some great advice that I will take into consideration. Thanks for the suggestion! I have not seen thede before, so will definitely check them out!
