How should I store my automatic watches?

I am about to reach the incredible number of 3 automatic watches and I’m starting to wonder how to store them.

I have them in a watch box on my drawer but my main problem would be about their charge.

I don’t own (and don’t plan to) watch winders so I was considering a couple of options about how to keep them charged while being in the box

Here are the ideas I had:

1- manually wind them every couple of days (they all have at least 40 hours of reserve) but I wouldn’t like to follow this way since I’ve read that manually winding them could damage the movement

2- just let them run until they run out of charge and then eventually set them up correctly once I wear them

3-extract the crown maybe with the seconds hand at a useful position and then set them correctly once I wear them

Two of these methods require setting them the day I decide to use them which may seem a lot but actually it takes just a minute

What would you suggest to do?

I just let mine wind down and reset them when it's time to wear them. Part of pleasure n routine of choosing what watch to wear (mind you got a few more 3) a bit of tactile experience between you and your watches.

·

Number 2, wear one for a week or so that way your not endlessly resetting watches.

·

Just set them when you wear them again. You will probably have 1 watch you will wear more any way.

·

Let them wind down and just wear your watches when you feel like you want to put them on. Chances are you will eventually add more mechanical watches as time goes on and there is no point in trying to juggle keeping them all wound will eventually become annoying. UNLESS you really enjoy doing it. Then have at it. Just know it’s isn’t necessary

Option 2 👍

I just let mine run down and reset when I need to

I store most of my watches in the boxes they came in and set them when I decide to wear it.

·

I decided to go for number 2, thank you all for the feedback!

·

Option 2 is what I do. I wear the same watch most days and most often swap it for a quartz/g shock that's always running before going back to that mechanical before it runs out of power reserve.

·

I was a group 1 collector, winding all my autos at the end of the day, but some movements *cough* Powermatic 80 *cough* don’t like being hand-wound often. That’s why I progressed reluctantly into the group 2 and so far so good.

If you’re this type of collector, you learn fast how to appreciate things like longer power reserves, quickset date complications and quartz watches.

·

I let mine run down then give them a wind when I want to wear them.

·

Depends how safe you want to keep 'em..

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Also never leave the crown stem pulled out (#3) you allow unnecessary moisture into the watch.

Thank you I didn’t know this, I’ve seen watches in store with their crown pulled out but maybe they have a more controlled environment

Hmm could be humidity controlled, or maybe they want them displayed with hands at a specific spot 🤷

·

Option 2. Also its better for the movement!

·

Seiko recommends you wind them so that it’s at least 50% power reserve for best accuracy. I manual wind my Seiko’s every morning on the days I don’t wear it. The whole manual wind/watch winder is bad for your watch is a myth.

Wrapped in bacon and kept in the sun

2.

Let them run down, set when you wear it.

I used to be number 2, but for my last birthday I got a nice wooden winder that fits 4 automatics and 6 more watches that don't need to be wound. Since then I don't worry about it. The motor is not always on, it stops by itself and then continues later.

·

Set them when you wear them. No need to keep them running if you wear 3 or more watches IMHO

Do you have a link to it? I’d like to see it, I’ve yet to see a winder I like but maybe

Let them wind down. When you grab one wind it a set it. Nice to have that tactile interaction with your watch.

·

Hehe three 😃😎 that number may double or triple soon enough

Yes haha better start thinks about it before it’s too late

You don't need to keep them running that much. They're machines, after all, and wear and tear on machines decreases their longevity. You COULD just wear one every third day and you're gonna be fine. But don't obsess about keeping them running. All that's gonna make happen is either a decreased service interval or needing to buy another watch sooner, so either way, keeping them running increases how much money you spend

·

Option 4: Keep them sealed in a laser beam-protected, hermetically-sealed titanium box that is lined with anti-magnetic carbon filament. This will dampen any nefarious EMW intrusions and/or gamma ray bursts from the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy’s red dwarfs.

But I like setting them 😉
