SKX Modding Regrets

I’ll start with this, my SKX is not modded. I can see the allure of modding this in the past when they were still in production and easy to get a good deal on.

As we all know, it is difficult to find and SKX in 2023 on eBay or other avenues that have not been modified or built from scratch with non OEM parts. In my opinion, the jangly jubilee, hardlex, aluminum insert, outdated movement and basic Seiko hands are what make the SKX great. Not once have I ever considered changing any of these things. There is nothing like a scratched up SKX that has been used and roughed up.

Modding a classic watch to sell for a profit does not make sense to me. Modding should make the watches value depreciate no matter how much was spent on it. Everyone has their own tastes, which I completely understand.

So the questions for the group are:

- Would you buy a modded SKX or only buy an un-modded SKX?

- If you have a modded SKX, do you have any regrets?

- Has the build from scratch model taken over as the new modding community?

I would only buy an unmodded SKX all I have changed on mine is the strap 👍🏻

Not crazy at all. If you enjoy it, that’s what is important 🫡

Agree, I wouldn't buy a mod, not my cup of tea.

To each their own tho.

(strange, because the first thing I did with my brand new motorcycle was to devalue it by customising it 😅)

So hears my experience and opinions on on this interesting topic you have bestowed upon me.

I got the SKX009j1 a couple of years ago just before prices got to crazy for them and it was stock parts from Seiko so no OEM no mod.

I knew how iconic the Watch was from forums and video research so I knew I didn’t want to touch anything on the inside of the case.

I opted to mod the case back to a see through knowing that I would be compromising the depth rating and exposing the movemt to dust for the brief duration which does make a difference although it was brief. Idk if I regret doing it but I probably will switch it back to stock because the movement design is nothing to write home about.

I also decided to modify the bezel because I’m in love with ceramic shine and scratch resistance so that was a no brainer being that it’s a very easy swap especially because I replaced the entire bezel not just the insert that to me was a home run except I scratched the case being a really novice modder at the time. But I believe in war scars on your watch so it doesn’t bother me to much.

In conclusion I can always reverse what I have done while preserving then orginal bezel so I’m happy with my decision after all. Hope this helps.

I'm not in the market for one now or ever, mostly due to the reasons you describe. However, were I to be, I'd want a clean slate from which to begin and maybe do my own mods.

I would love an original skx but given how customizable it has become I opted to start a build of my own. Something unique that represents me as an enthusiast who loves the skx but also a hobbies that enjoys building things!

That is awesome! Would much rather build one from scratch and source everything than butcher an existing perfectly good watch. Have contemplated on making one from scratch as well.

It has been an interesting experience so far for sure!

I buy, mod, or make a watch for myself, so I don't see why one wouldn't want to get the most out of their watches. The SKX is a good starting build because there's so many parts readily available. There's a lot to like with the SKX, but that doesn't mean it can't be better. I recently bought a modded SKX007 because it had all the upgrades I would've done myself.

I wouldn't mod an original SKX. Simple reason that all modding components are readily available as aftermarket parts.

·

Added a new bracelet. It made it so much better. I still have the old bracelet if I wanted to go back to OEM. But it has been on a NATO for the past couple of years. I don't have a problem with a new bezel insert. It can make it more fun it is easy to return to stock if needed.

First, is your pen modded with a space pen insert? Second, the more SKX’s that get modded, the more the value of the OG SKX’s goes up. So no, I’d not likely buy a modded SKX, nor mod mine. But to each his own.

Modded space pen? I don’t know what a space pen even is haha 😂. Just a Zebra pen I have always used and writes well.

There’s a popular mod you can do to your F-701 to accept a space pen refil. Been carrying mine like that for years as I’m often outside and writing with wet paper so the regular ink runs all over the place.

Never heard of the space pen but now I’m intrigued. Down the rabbit hole I go 😬

and THIS is how you become The WC Watchmaker

I reallly want a NOS to horde away as a ‘back up’. The most I’ve done to mine is coin edge bezel and play around with the bezel inserts.
