Lets start a discussion about the speedmasters!

You can’t go wrong with a speedmaster, right? But the term speedmaster is very broad in todays world. I would like to know what your opinion about the Speedmaster collection is, and what you think about the different models.

Lets start off with the classic Moonwatch: Its the watch that became known after being on the moon in 1969. Together with the Seamaster its the watch that makes the brand as it is today.

Than we have the Speedy Reduced: This watch still holds the main graphic design as the classic speedmaster professional, but, with some aspects changed, like the diameter of the watch.

Last but not least, we have the MoonSwatch: this is a watch that broke the interent when it came out. I remember going to the swatch store the day before the launch to see if their was a line, and boy was i surprised to see that the line was already 30-40 men strong. It was sad and amazing at the same time. To see so much need for a watch that only costs €260 is crazy.

Right, i‘m interested in what you think about the speedmaster collection, and, what you think about the the MoonSwatch. Did the collaboration bring the overall value of Omega down or did it elevated its brand?

The MoonSwatch is surely my favorite Speedmaster by a mile. It is free of the dusty boomerism that defines the Speedmaster,  the Harley-Davidson of watches and watch buyers.

·

I want a Moonwatch in the future. I toyed with the idea of a 57 but I think I’d go with the ‘original’. My only dilemma now would be sapphire or hesalite. Hesalite being truer to the original but the sapphire looks so much nicer with the see through caseback and polished inner links.

The moon swatch is a gimmick in my opinion and shouldn’t have received the hype and publicity it did. But consumerism, ya know.

·

Well said, i completely agree with you! I’ve been thinking of getting a leather strap for my Speedmaster, is it worth it? I think it looks badass and classy at the same time👌

I think it‘s a nice product, but have heard that there are many problems with it. Do you own one, and if so, do you have any issues with the watch?

I agree with the sapphire looks amazing as well. i think you should consider the watch you like the most, no matter how much it differs from the ‘original’.

Annual bonus will be in hand in ~ 60 days. Annual bonus will be greatly depleted in about 61 days, and in its place will be an Omega Speedmaster Professional 3861 sapphire sandwhich.

Also, the new Speedy 57 is gorgeous!

·

I thought I could be swayed by any other number of dressy chronos, but after trying on many, it always comes back to the speedmaster for the perfect proportions and style. Plus, the heritage.

That said... As much as I dig the 'conventional' 3-sub-dial layout I'm a new '57 aficionado with the 2 sub dials.

·

I have a Speedy Moonphase, which is both one of my favorite watches and also pretty far from most other Speedies. I don’t have a problem with the MoonSwatch; I don’t want one, but it certainly raised brand awareness.

Yeah I would have gone with the dark red 57 if it was the same size as the pro. But it wears just a bit too big for me the lug to lug is longer. So I guess it was meant to be haha.

It’s a 2020, OG Omega leather with a deployant clasp. It also came with a NATO. The leather is way more comfortable as the watch sits lower, but both look good in pictures.

Though I like the original moonwatch and the history with NASA, I personally would not buy it since the design does nothing for me. Unless I can get my hand on latest Snoopy speedmaster. Having said that I have 2 variations of speedmaster and absolutely love them.

The latest moonswatch was a brilliant marketing strategy to get younger generation into traditional watches

I own 2 Speedmasters: an 105.012-63 and an 105.012-66. The latter is worn quite often while the former is kind of a reminder of how lucky I am to have one of those. I don't see myself parting ways with either one.

·

I find Speedmasters absolutely iconic due to its history, but I lament the connection with the moon landing as I don‘t believe in it. So the more Omega pushes that fact into selling more Moonwatches, the more I stay away.

I did briefly fell in love with the MoonSwatch, but its reliability was its main downfall, for me. Which made me think further; 30m water resistance, hesalite/plastic and the stepped dial design aren’t for me or my lifestyle. the moonswatch saved me a few thousand dollars.

I bought the 3861 sapphire and couldn’t be happier with it, it’s my speedy Saturday watch 😅, I know i know it’s a great daily as well but I have my explorer on my wrist M-F as true “tool=work” watch. Over the years I have owned the triple date, the broad arrow and the 1861 versions of speedy. The 3861 is by far the best version, the stepped dial that remained true to its original design, the movement is superb and pretty to stare at, the redesigned bracelet is the best there is with that sexy tapering, the clasp with micro adjustment is icing on the cake. I found myself not able to nitpick at anything about this latest iteration. It is the speedy to have.

That being said I find myself lusting over the snoopy, it’s such a fun novelty watch but Novelty at best, it’s not a must have.

so there’s my honest opinion on the 3861 sapphire moon watch ~ I LOVE it!

Now on to the moonSwatch thingy… I think both Swatch and Omega did great in this collaboration, it has brought tremendous interest to Omega’s moonwatch because everyone is wondering how come this speedmaster is so popular, it made people look into Omega’s history in speedmaster and who knows how many youngsters bought the swatch version with goals to one day owning a real moonwatch. I myself have bought a Venus for my daughter and a moon for my nephew; my daughter doesn’t care much about the history or the function of it other than it’s pretty pink and white lol, my nephew was genuinely into the “heritage“ of the moonwatch but thinks the future moonwatch that goes into space will be far from a mechanical watch and be a cool futuristic Ai computer on the wrist thing which I’ll have to agree.

Honestly I personally think that the moonswatch and the snoopy and might as well the bond watch are in the same novelty category other than the price differences, there, I said it and I’m probably gonna be on a lot of people‘s hate list but that’s just me and I’m too old to change 😆

I have a 3861 hesalite and absolutely love it! However I have a liking also for the "first omega in space" speedmaster as I love the baton hands, which I've been informed that NASA asked Omega to slim down for future models to make the chrono more readable.

MoonSwatch-wise - great pressies for nephews and nieces and waiting for a Neptune for myself. I think they're great as a fun option and introduces the next generation and newbies to the industry/ hobby.
