Sharing and Bragging what really is the difference?!

Since I’m a noob with this sharing and bragging business, how can one share without a sense of bragging one’s possessions? I always find posting in Instagram/Facebook or any forums have such negative connotations I’m my opinion. Is it just me? Albeit, I love seeing and watching others work or art or pieces that I haven’t seen and broadening my opinion. Anyway must be just me, I just don’t want to post to brag I want to post to share.

I love seeing what's out there.  Posting here is different than Instagram or Facebook.  You are not selling your lifestyle here.  I don't care what car you drive or what champagne you drink.  I don't care that you are in Ibiza with a scantily clad woman on your arm.

Watch nerds nerding out.  Nothing more.  No ego involved.  Throw some pics up.

Looks great.  Dead as a doornail.  Is accurate twice a day.  It is a long dead brand that deserves some love.

Thank you! and awesome piece! also one thing that Watchcrunch showed me is the real appreciation of the watch especially the vintage watches and their history! I guess I’m with the right company 🍻

It's a fine line, but I think ultimately it comes down to the poster's intentions. IG and FB makes it a bit difficult to discern this because often times, people look at just the photo.

Basically I think it boils down to: do you want to have a discussion on the piece? Or are you just looking for 👍 and ❤️?

Or in my case flexing in South Beach, with all my 304s. 😂(I had to visit that place on business, it surely is a different world.)

Yes, I do get the feeling that people here are really into watches, and the fun you can have with them.

·

The problem on Instagram and Facebook is that very few people understand watches, what they represent, or what may interest you in a watch. Heck, my own wife is only interested in the sense that I change the batteries on her watches. Hence the responses on social media focus on the obvious, which is the brand.

I’m more about the history of the pieces and the story on how one acquire one even though it can be just as simple that they love it. For me, it’s what is it that you loved about the piece, and why is it reminiscent of the past or maybe a premonition of the future. I know I’m weird but I like stories lol

That's what I like about this hobby too. Yeah it's fun geeking out over specs/techniques applied of a watch but I ultimately enjoy reading/listening about what led a person to a particular watch!

this is good example what bragging looks like 😂😂. i also got some negative response when i post on instagram because most of my friend didnt appreciate this hobby and assume my watch post is some form of show off. thx to watchcrunch now i can share my passion with a fellow watch enthusiast, this is a safe space for sharing. 👍

·

Agree, as long as there’s a story behind the Patek and Rolex I’ll read it lol

OP, people are invariably bragging on FB and Insta and other social media sites.  Why?  Because they're not anonymous.  And, for the most part, my understanding is that most young, single people use Instagram as a means by which to identify potential mates.  Females invariably post photos of themselves in skimpy clothing, in order to attract DMs.  Males invariably post photos of themselves with expensive consumer goods like watches and cars (I have so much wealth I can afford to waste my money on these luxury goods), in expensive locales (I have so much wealth I can afford to waste a ton of money on flying to stupid locales around the world to take selfies), in order to have the scantily-clad females respond when they send DMs to 'em.

Here on WC, we're all old, married or divorced, or with SO, and most importantly, we're all ANONYMOUS!!!

If anybody is trying to "flex" in order to attract a mate on here, it would conceivably be the dumbest way in the world to go about it!

I was very late discovering this reverse watch snob phenomena until someone here mentioned reluctance to post Rolex shots. As someone for whom Rolex is only tangentially a goal, it never crossed my mind.  In some of my earliest comments I made the sort of off-hand dismissive judgements that you speak of.

Now, I am not ready to bestow full blown victim status on the wearers of high end pieces, but we should all be mindful that we are all searching for cools watches, whatever the MSRP.  For the record I am equally annoyed by G-Shock boosterism ("I just hiked around the rim of the world's highest active volcano with my G-Shock, try that in your Breguet.")

There is a class divide that is becoming more obvious in our culture.  Watches reflect that.  We all need to resist the resentment in either direction.

Stories are great, but can also come off as bragging.

FWIW in my [checks watch] 10 days here, I don't feel like I've seen one post I'd consider bragging.

·

I love WC so much for this. I genuinely feel like we are all here to geek out about the watches themselves and not the lifestyle that allowed/funded the acquisition.

I joined the r/watches sub on Reddit about a month ago and I see posts all the time along the lines of "Just bought my first watch..." or "Here is my 3 watch collection. It's not a lot, but it's mine" and the first watch is some $10K Rolex or the collection cost more than my car.

True, but I feel like if I initiate the conversation and asking about the story it’s more they’re sharing their stories with me…

Oh for sure. That's then just conversation.

I was mostly commenting on the unbidden posting of the stories can come off as bragging.

·

Your right! no more judgements here just pure appreciation of the piece. If there’s a story with it I would love to hear it lol.

·

Maybe my perspective is skewed, but I am always worried that everyone else is sharing and I am the only one that is bragging. 😂

I am not sure this is an either/or situation. I know with at least some of my posts, if I am completely honest, there is a bit of both going on. It is sort of like the day after Christmas (for those of you who celebrate it) in the neighborhood, running around to show your friends all the nifty new toys you got and seeing what all of them got.

I do not mean in your face aggressive bragging, but when I post a pic of a new watch or a watch that was hard to find, there is a little bit of "look what I got!" despite the primary reason being sharing an interesting (at least to me) watch with the community. 😉

edit: I should add that it is not about the price of the watch either. Those of you who know me know I collect at the lower tiers.

·

I think that when I show my watches, that is sharing. But all others are bragging😎

I hope there is room for all kinds of watches on WC. I’m intrigued by all the fantastic watches presented to us. But it is the variaty that is the spice. Every all G-Shocks, all Rolex (same but different colors) or tick every classic watch, without any odd ball is just boring with no personality. What I seen so far the WC community seems to have a personal collection with great variaty, high as well as low.

·

i appreciated rolex, patek, etc post same as any other brand🙏🏻🙏🏻.

·

How do I politely say that there are certain watches that are so overrepresented that almost everybody already knows exactly what they are and what they look like, and any additional imagery requires some justification?

I realize not everyone is super verbose and emotive, but please say something more than the generic "Just bought the XXX that I always wanted. So happy with this watch!" that tells us almost nothing unique whatsoever. I have an equal problem with this being a "look what I got!" post as the fact that it is trite and banal.

If you done it, it ain’t bragging.

Like most things in life its depends on how its presented , and to who. This platform is very different than IG/insert other BS platform here ,and by diffrent I mean better, because its not full of kids , wannabe internet gurus, and generally the crowd here tend to be less geared towards market and values , and more towards design/brand and community.
