What makes a watch look "worth" it's price tag

I was having an interesting conversation with a local tradesman as I discovered he was a fellow watch enthusiast.

He had a pretty impressive collection including a speedy, Grand seiko skyflake and a tudor GMT.

I showed him my above GO the last luxury watch I own (I sold the rest of my collection for a new house and becoming a soon to be Dad!). He said that's a £10k watch, you wouldn't believe it.

Now to me the value proposition of the GO SEAQ is clear as day but I also see his point. The above watch new costs probably as much as a used speedy, skyflake and GMT. I think this is definitely a hobby which follows the law of diminishing returns.

That being said I'd still and did take this watch over the above 3 well because to me it's worth it. I wear it every day and almost after a year of ownership I still think "damn I'm lucky to have this"

I can full heartedly agree, would chose the SEAQ over the other 3 too. :-)

Definitely a sweet watch.

In terms of choices, spend, etc. I say each to his own.

If I had 10k to spend on watches, I don’t think I would buy that. Not because I don’t like it or don’t think it’s worth that but because my preferences are different. And that’s what makes this an interesting hobby/pastime/passion.

In terms of the GO, it’s pretty perfect but if I could change one thing to make it better it would be the tip of the minute hand. I know for many that’s its USP but - for me -/it detracts from the elegance of the styling. Again just personal preference and we are all different.

GO is a great brand. I have two, and wanted this one also. I couldn’t afford to get there when I was building my primary collection. But if I decide to open the primary collection, and with the release of the white Speedy I’m thinking of increasing, this is going to be on the list.

Yes absolutely. I'll be honest when I first saw this watch I thought the hands were odd the distortion was crazy. It really looked odd. However when I saw it in the metal and put it on it just fit like a glove and blew my mind.

It would be boring if we had the same taste indeed!

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and we all have different values, aesthetic, historical and technical.

A lot of stuff I see on here really doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, but I gain some happiness and appreciation from knowing it's a fellow WIS pride and joy . 👍🏻

Interesting question, and the answers will make interesting reading.

An obvious (and possibly unpopular) answer is branding. Most of us have a general idea of cost based solely on that.

High quality hand-set, dial furniture and detail probably comes next - the dial being the first thing you look at.

If you’re not a watch guy and GO, JLC or VC doesn’t mean much to you I wonder if the style of a watch makes a difference? A quality moon phase triple date is probably percieved as being more expensive than a tool watch. Leather straps may help too.

Movement finishing (if you know what to look for) would be my other big one, followed by case / bracelet finishing, but often that’s better appreciated in the hand than by eye.

Ooh - the quality of the sapphire too - there’s often a big difference between the crystal on premium watches compared to more approachable watches.

That’d probably be my process - not that you asked - I sorta fixated on your heading!

🤷🏻

Nice watch by the way.

The brand name… I’m not being facetious, but we all know it. No matter how you spin it, it’s either a brag, a statement, a flex, or a subversive reverse-flex. We are all fickle children at the end of the day…

The same things that make a Mercedes worth more than a Kia. From the quality of materials used to the design, assembly, and intangibles such as “the feel of it”. Yes a GO and a Casio both tell time the same way a Mercedes and a Kia will both take you where you want to go, but sometimes it’s about the trip.

Your watch, your rules. Great piece BTW

For me it is something out of the ordinary that makes me like a watch. For the GQ it would be the date window.

Watches, like anything niche, requires a certain base knowledge to be able to go deeper into the hobby. I, for one, would never be able to tell the difference between entry luxury and high luxury boats, to me a fancy boat's a fancy boat. Same as how someone can look at a watch and say "yeah I can tell it's a nice watch, but beyond that who can say?" Your associate clearly likes watches but lacks the knowledge of GO to be aware of what makes them that next level up, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, he's where he wants to be in the hobby and you are where you are, it's great you can each appreciate the other's watch even if you can't put yourselves in the other's shoes.
