Is there a watch that you just don't get?

Time to get sacrilegious folks!

Is there an iconic or universally loved watch that you just don't get?

For me it's the Submariner, particularly a modern Submariner. But even so - there's vintage divers that I'd jump on before I looked at a Sub (early Seamaster 300 ... Oh yeah!).

What's the 'great' watch that leaves you saying ... meh?

I like the no-date Submariner, including the current one, though I'll concede there's nothing superlative about it.

But the Tudor Black Bay....I simply can't abide. Who decided to put all the shapes on it?

I'd choose a Sub date over a no date - I'm pro cyclops - but Iike the Black Bay, particularly the BB54. I'd own it if I didn't have oran-utan wrists. 🐒

IWC... All of them. Sorry, I know they're great watches. They're just so generic and boring. And this is someone who loves a plain black design as much as the next guy. I don't get them.

·

Omegas don't do it for me. Or Cartier.

·

For me it's the dive watch trend generally. There is no one diver that stands out as bad for me. My issue with them is that I find the general design unappealing. I struggle to understand why it's so popular. The only dive watch I have ever tried on which I really liked is the new Tudor Black Bay with the burgundy bezel on a jubilee. That is a really nice watch which I might get at some point, but apart from that divers rarely impress me. I know it's a hot take 🔥

The explorer,all around watch.

·

Same here. The sub.

The AT bores the shite out of me - like the Speedie Pro a lot, love the re-issued '57 trilogy. But other wise, not for me either. Appreciate their craftsmanship though.

Explorer 2, i find it... ugly

I had a discussion with an enthusiast friend this week about IWC. He spent hours at an AD while his wife shopped. He has large wrists, so size isn't an issue. He tried on several but just couldn't understand the draw. (He is mostly an Omega guy.)

That's what I wanted to hear!

I'm not far from that opinion - I don't dislike 'em per se, but don't love 'em either. My only diver is a Certina DS PH200-m - and I love it, won't ever sell it. My other watches are mostly chronographs, GMT'S or field / expedition watches.

I am loving the new 39mm Longines Legend Diver and I'm considering a ZRC so maybe that's changing?

I get that - they're sorta the wrist worn version of a luxury German family saloon.

Not bad to look at, great quality but hardly exciting.

Took me a while to get the allure of the G, but I'm a new convert. 😂

Oh and Lorier as well. Their designs seem like they Frankenstein-picked different design elements from vintage watches mashed together. Absolutely no idea why the enthusiast community loves them so.

Dan Henry is somewhat in the same boat, but they’re just basically straight-homages of previous iconic designs. They don’t try to claim anything other than being homages of iconic pieces so that bugs me less.

·

the sub

By a thousand miles

·

Mine is the Rolex Date-Just. I “just” don’t get why people like it so much. To me it’s an old man’s watch and it doesn’t straddle the sport & dressy categories as well as some other Rolex models-IMHO. For the money, there are many other watches I would rather own.

·

I love the Sub....I despise just about every Seiko I've ever seen! Especially their cartoonish dive watches. Just my 2 cents. 😂

·

Well, as long as buying retail, Sub is okay. Do not understand "hype and hyped-price" around it.

IMO, there are so many!

BB54, not THAT of a big deal.

IWC Mark series, paying full retail for that is...

Any Panerai with 30m WR

Premium on Omega Snoopy limited edition

Omega Aqua Terra why so up in retail?

Omega Constellation.

Buying at premium on Tank Solo Small

·

Most rolex to be honest. IMO the explorer (all ages) is the best looking rolex but it's too small.

·
bignic450

Any watch that costs as much as a new car!

I know some cost as much as a house (house in silicon valley, that is). Those good, right? 🤪

·
Unholy

actually first im obsessing about submariner when i first dug into watch collecting thing, but now the desire about the sub is gone lol. there are too many great dive watch for fraction of the submariner price

Touché. 😁

Yeah, I do like vintage DJ's - especially a two tone, but the modern ones don't do it for me. It is a watch that I'm happy to admire from a far though - don't plan on ever owning it.

Grand Seiko? I’m sure there will be a day they will run out of sceneries to base their dials on.

·

Oooh Blancpain FF, massive hockey puck design tha just does nothing for me.

Nah, plenty more where that came from. Japanese companies domestically are addicted to limited editions of some sort, so I have no doubt GS will continue with limited editions of one sort or another on their dials.

·

Most watches from AP. And I HATE the design of their Code line…feels very “mall watch” to me in initial appearance.

·
Larry_Von_Trapp

Any Rolex with a fluted bezel. Looks like it came out or a Christmas cracker

Wow. I thought I was the only one. Always felt it was “the emperor has no clothes” phenomenon.

·

Agree. although I did buy the CW The Twelve.
