Finally Tracked Down This Discontinued Longines!

This model (except it was the 41mm version) had been on my radar a couple of years ago, but I never made the move to purchase one because I wasn’t ready to make that jump to $1k+ watches. However, I never really lost interest.

Over the the past year or so, I had begun seeking out smaller case sizes, and when Longines released the updated Conquest line, it jogged my memory and started me trolling Jomashop, eBay, etc… hoping to see if anyone was selling off the outgoing model. The problem was, the 39 had already been discontinued and the 41mm and 43mm made up the majority of listings.

Finally, last week, I found a 39mm come up pre-owned from a grey market dealer and I jumped on it. I had been holding out on any new purchases in anticipation of the next drop of Lorier Hyperions, but that no longer seems imminent, and this is a watch I’ve wanted or some time. So Lorier number three will have to wait.

Loving it so far! 39 is really a goldilocks size for this type of watch; compact but feels extremely solid and has a masculine “stance” on wrist. It’s very legible with its mashup between a splash of Explorer DNA and the printed high-contrast more tooly look of the Sinn 556a. It’s a bit flashier than the Sinn’s fully brushed case, but it’s also not an Explorer homage— not to mention it was less expensive than either!

The case is simple but very crisply finished, and the piano black dial is incredibly deep and rich. The bracelet is a bit chunky with no taper and a butterfly clasp, but it fits the aesthetic. Polished midlinks are bound to be scratch and fingerprint magnets, but I’m ok with that, this isn’t a dedicated rugged tool watch for me. Lume is adequate.

I think the Conquest and my Lorier Falcon will sit very comfortably next to each other in the watchbox, representing both vintage and modern embodiments of this style of watch.
