The way the market is at the moment I've been concentrating on pre-owned, specifically barely worn watches purchased from an authorised dealer in the last year or so.
It's a better proposition than the grey market if you're getting the 'factory' warranty and the price advantage - at least imo.
When I find a watch that I love and will never sell, the price is immaterial, and those are the ones I buy from the ADs. For others, I fully agree that other marketplaces offer much better value.
Cheap watches are mostly AliExpress and a little Amazon. Parts for custom builds is AliExpress. Expensive stuff, discontinued and used watches, Chrono24.

This is a great strategy. I’ve purchased two Omegas from my favorite AD preowned that were sold by them originally and were still under factory warranty.
It entirely depends on the price level and whether not a movement is in-house. The more unique or expensive a watch, the more you’ll want the warranty.

A good grey market dealer

Local luxury jewelers and small online businesses are the best imo.
Chrono24 & ebay.
Mostly online.

New I'll go AD unless it's something like a Rodger Smith in which case I'll get him to pop it round. 😁
A mix of in-store and online purchases. And the online purchases can be directly from the manufacturer/brand, third-party dealers or eBay.

Only buy used, and either eBay or Facebook forums.
I voted AD. But, Long Island is an AD also. So, I am unsure the goal of the poll. I’d never buy from Jomashop again though. I can say that.

All three. Depends what I’m buying.
AD or Watchfinder for higher end watches - Chrono24, eBay, Jomashop, Poljot24, and Gnomon for more affordable new and used pieces.
All of the above and then some, lol, depends on what piece I am chasing
Toppers Fine Jewelers
