I have to second the Vostok recommendation.  Vintage Russian watches have unusual styling and are affordable.  Check out Raketa, Zim/Pobeda, Chaika and Luch.  Ruhla (former E. Germany) models from the 60's and 70's are beautiful, if less reliable.

Orient Tri-Star. Nice, 70s style 'datejust' design watches made in Japan with in-house movements that are absolute workhorses. Can be had for a song, and are a great option for a first automatic.

Mine is the older version of the 'Tri-Star Deneb' that they are selling now. Uses the same movement as the Mako-1 with the push button quick day selector (Orient cal. 469)

Theyre simple as can be but they look rather nice and often go for less than 100$.

If you want something that'll always work no matter what, get a Casio, Orient Tristar, Timex or Vostok. If you want something interesting for not a lot of money (as in <€35) yet you don't mind getting a watch that's been through the ringer, HMTs are pretty interesting. While they're most likely frankenwatches that haven't been serviced in God knows how long they're definitely conversation starters, and they're a part of horological history that isn't really touched on that often. I wouldn't recommend them as a reliable daily beater, though

Sgw600h!  I have talked this one up a few times since I started on here yesterday lol. Very cool watch, dual sensor and world time, great price as well!(Image failed to load!)

I'll second the recommendation for Russian/Soviet watches.  This one celebrates the Soviet Union's accomplishments in space.  The second hand is a spinning Sputnik.

The Parnis PA6038 dress watch. Goes on AliExpress between £70 and £95, on various stores with various colour variations. Miyota movement, with hacking, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal. I have the rose gold variation. Not a crazy watch by any means, quite the opposite, but watch reviewers seemed to have largely ignored this.

Have a look at the Casio Twin Graph AE-20W.

Desperately want one but can't bring myself to pay £300 odd for decent condition ones on eBay...(Image failed to load!)

300£ for a casio?! Why?!

That's what my wife said 😂 You can get some well used ones around the price range you mentioned though. Really interesting looking little watches though, at least you'd likely not see someone else with one on wrist!

Yeah that's all fine but why the **** does a plastic casio cost 300£

I'm not an expert but I know they went out of production around 25-30 years ago so probably the scarcity of decent ones left doesn't help (I think I read Steve Jobs wore one early doors in Apple which doesn't help either as people get excited for some reason when famous people owned things) . Plus there are alot of keen Casio collectors around who I expect would pay a premium for the older out of production models...

Loreo best sub $100 all day long on AliExpress roughly around $80 CDN. 316L stainless steel oyster style case 5 digit reference.  Sapphire Crystal, 200m water resistant which I tested to 9 feet deep, 316L stainless steel solid endlinks and solid links with a ST16 automatic movement.  I've had this watch over 2 years and it's works GREAT!  Good luck 🤙🏽

I have a Tudor homage from Pagani Design that I was a beater, but it gets a lot of compliments. i Love vintage watches but you have to handle them with care and know a good watch guy when they inevitably get a problem. there are some great finds on AliExpress for less than £100 if you don’t mind homage watches.
