New IWC Ingenieur

I didn't expect it at all, but after trying on a new IWC, I fell in love at first sight.

I have entered my name on the waiting list, but I will have to wait for the aquamarine color for about a year. I don't know how I'll feel about them after such a long time. Let's check it out!

In general, I understand that these watches have a lot of disadvantages:

  • price 12k$

  • basic IWC caliber 32111, which can be found in watches twice as cheap

  • butterfly clasp without micro-adjustments

  • closed back cover

These disadvantages are quite important, but at the moment the beauty of the watch overrides this for me.

Regarding the butterfly clasp, iwc listened to customers and added another option, but it's still not what you need! JLC, who are in the same group with IWC, has an excellent butterfly clasp with micro-adjustment, why couldn't it be used? Saved money. Besides, I don't understand why IWC put its base caliber in such a price range, it's just a shame. The factory could easily use its 82-series caliber, assembled in Schaffhausen and having all the DNA of the brand. They put 82 calibers in Pilots or Portuguese, at a lower cost, but for their flagship, for the legend, they chose the ValFleurier factory production caliber, which they also put in baume mercier. Shame!!! There are no other words. I really want to ask this question to the CEO. I understand that this watch should cost more than bacis pilots, thanks to the legend, but the technical characteristics should correspond to this!

And what is your opinion about the new iwc? Can he be forgiven for all these disadvantages?

I like this watch a lot and would certainly consider it. It feels like it is priced high because they can, rather because it reflects what it is worth.

That said, I really like it. I’d have to experience it first: see how the size feels on my wrist, what the strap feels like.

I have a Zenith Defy Skyline (black ceramic) which I love and it a similar price point, but it does have the El Primero which helps justify its price.

At the end of the day, at this price point I’d have to try the Laureto, Defy and Ingenieur together (perhaps with the Alpine Eagle) to decide if the dial is worth it

·

If it were my money? I’d go with the Baume & Mercier Riveria…an almost identical watch for a a third of the IWC’s price.

But, it ain’t my money!. So let us know if you decide to get it…and as always, pics when you do!

I tried it on and it’s great in person. I just think there are too many better options for $12k.

I love the ingenieur and nearly pulled the trigger on a 2015 Laureus Sport for Good model a bit back (if I found one not insanely priced and in good condition, I still would). So before analyzing the price, I still love this watch, and the new design is dead-on and gets a nod from me 100/100.

The ingenieur was always special in my mind: an attainable (relatively speaking, of course) Genta designed watch that walked the walk and talked the talk with technology and robustness. That's what makes the current offerings so difficult for me: I think that the watch looks fantastic, and my mouth was watering when it came out; however, despite the build quality or any other justification for the huge increase in cost, they're now pricing it out of being "the attainable Genta" and now it's more like "the less expensive but still pretty pricey Genta"

That doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nicely, I'm afraid.

Wow, it's a beauty! Great photo.

For awhile, IWC were busy selling watches at 6-10K USD range. So when they released the new Ingenieur at 12K+ people went nuts. I've tried the watch URL and OMFG it is beautiful. The finishing's got that the premium feel. But most of all it feels like a Genta’s design watch. To me it feel and look better than GP Laureato or other cheaper homages/wannabes like B&M Riveria).

I would love to get one myself, since I have many of Genta's watches, only if the price is lower, but hey! its' your money, you do you.

Great point, the Riviera is just so gorgeous in almost all of its color variations it's not even fair

Love this watch. Beautiful👌

This is a stunner! Congratulations🤝

12k though. Heavy price tag but…. That might be the price tag not to have Roman numerals on the dial ( Riveria)😂I hate Roman numerals on a watch🤮

Same with Alpine Eagle

Well, there's a year waiting list so that answers the question of "why", it's because they can. Perhaps there's a bit of forced scarcity/ haloing going on as well. Good news is you have all that time to ponder if those other details really matter to you or not.

·

I love the look of that!!

·

I have been thinking about the Ingenieur, do not object to the massively inflated price here in Canada but that dial is something I cannot pay for, waiting to check out the Baume&Mercier Riviera fitted with a perpetual calendar Moonphase which imo is a better waste of my watch collecting budget.

·

Yeah it’s your wrist and your time my friend. Enjoy it. Only your decision matters. Great watch!

·

This watch seems way too expensive to me with all of the shortcomings you mentioned, but I haven't tried it on. A lot of people who have worn the watch say it is incredible in person. I'd love to try it on, but 12k is just out of my personal price range so maybe I shouldn't in case I also fall in love with it.

·

I am in a different universe. This watch costs more than my new furnace, my car, and my whole watch collection combined. But I love its looks too, and I will forgive almost anything about a watch if I like its looks.

I like the Ingineur's dial so much that I bought the new Seiko SUR517P1. Its dial resembles the IWC, it has very pretty metalwork, sapphire, reliable Seiko quartz movement and a good strap, all for $160, which is the watch universe I inhabit.

IWC Ingenieur about a year ago and have been waiting for the new one to come out..now, I am a IWC fan but IMO they have way overpriced this piece. Yes it is nice, but there are a heck of alot of watches out there that are NICE for that kind of money...JMO...so I passed on this one. OP says he is on a wait list, or was on one..I picked up another Omegs last month from my ad and they tried real hard to get me to pick up the new IWC.I explained that I only paid 9k for my JLC Polaris..again, I would buy one if I felt better about the price...Anyway, we all have opinions...Enjoy the hobby..

.It looked good, it felt good..it just didnt feel 12k good, TO ME..again JMO.. Enjoy the hobby..

·

Love it. Not mad at the price. I'm hoping to add it to my collection as well.

·

For what I understood, 32-series calibers are sourced as ébauches from ValFleurier but assembled, decorated and regulated at Schaffhausen.

·

I haven't seen the new Ingenieur in person or tried it on, but it definitely seems overpriced given the specs. Of course, IWC does know how to make a great bracelet and a beautifully watch. A number of people, like you, who have tried it on say it is special. Maybe I will get a chance to try one, but it is out of my price range even if I were to fall in love with it. I was hoping for a price around $6-7.5k for the new model, which would still be too expensive for me but perhaps something I could realistically save for. If you love it and have the money, buy it. I am just jealous that I can't afford a watch in this price range right now.
