It’s impossible to treat a beater watch like a ‘beater watch’.

One thing we humans seem to possess over the other beasts of this earth is a bleeding-streak of anthropomorphism that runs the length of our elongated spines. It’s seen in cars, buildings, bridges…and dare I say watches.

I bought My Armitron to be a beater —to suffer humiliating abuse from flying grass and mud, ricocheting rocks and whipping reeds. But…I can’t do it! I can’t let this Armitron (as well as all my other watches) be dealt such a life. What a monstrous thing to inflict upon a good friend.

Is a beater watch to you just a tool of practicality…or does it evoke something soft inside your innards?

I try to not baby any of my watches, and I definitely don't take a digital off to do yardwork, or other jobs. I usually don't even take off a mechanical or quartz analog unless the strap is leather, and might get ruined.

For me, watches are a tool for telling the time. Some of them are designed for different environments (field, office, water), but in the end they are each primarily there to tell me the time. If a watch gets scratched from use, it gets scratched...

I definitely anthropomorphize objects and treat them as if they were friends. I'm a softie. But my beater watch box has a dedicated team unafraid to tackle the hard jobs. 💪

I long for the grit you possess.

Fairly-said!

Less grit, and more a general lack of attachment to things. I've never really felt much attachment to any possession, regardless of whether it's a watch, car, clothing, etc.. It's just stuff to me.

I try to protect and treat all of watches in a good way but I don't get sad when one gets a scratch or something like that.

See, you need a Casio F-91W because they will always be abundant and inexpensive and never change. And best of all, you can forget you are wearing it. That is the problem with lumps like yours. They remind you of their presence.

I own one, but the band is so short there’s not enough length to secure properly in the keeper without coming out so often. It’s unnerving.

I bought a Celsius 9 for one reason-To work it to death. And after all it's been through, and that's a lot, it still ticks, and well. I've grown majorly attached to it, and it's taken everything I've flung at it with a shrug. The lume is good, the digital functions are more than suitable, the frictionless bezel doesn't get knocked out off place as often as I'd expect, and overall, I love it to bits.

Yes you can! My Tag Aquaracer quartz was my one watch for quite a while - until I got into this hobby. It got scratched in the swimming pool quite quickly. Now I wear it every day for sports, and while the bracelet is quite scuffed the watch head has held up pretty well.

My other watches, both more expensive and less, are spared that. It's simple. The Tag is the beater. The others aren't.

If I'd started now, sure, I would have chosen a much cheaper watch to be the beater. But that's how it was. And I still get pleasure from seeing the sunburst dial in the light, while noting that the bezel has faded completely due to the Malaysian sun. The Watch is doing what it's supposed to do.

My beaters get beat but because I have 3, they don’t get beat that badly.
