But actually, I would get the quartz. I don't really think you should spend a lot on a Tissot as eventually a Longines, Tudor, Omega, Rolex would come a calling.
Auto, mainly because of the dial. I love the waffle look. The quarzdial is to plain for me and the datewindow is just hideous in my opinion. And, there is no quarz mother of pearl dial, wich i got for my wife.
So, my advice, don't think about the movement go for the looks and that is a personal decision.
Decision was easy for me because I wanted the lume dial and quartz was the only option, but I like the brushing on the quartz models’ dials more than the waffle dials too. Quartz is a great watch and much cheaper.

Why should he go up the price? Not everyone has to climbe up the price ladder to enjoy the hobby. And what would he get from Rolex? An endless waitinglist or purchasing stuff that he doesnt even want befor he even gets an offer?

He should avoid Rolex.
Why should he not? Why target Rolex when I also mentioned other brands? I think after awhile and after you've done with Tissot you could want a Longines or a Tudor. Or Omega. Not only Rolex. All offer better finishing vs Tissot, which is after all built and sold to a price.

I would have got the quartz too if the date window was framed like the auto

I hear and read this stuff mostly from Rolex, thats why. The other brands are more reasonable to get. Those you mention are not the only brands in existence. An not everyone is so hot about spending multiple thousands of dollar on a watch.
And really, finish? That is such a poor argument to justify those watch prices.
Well, us arguing is kinda pointless. OP should tell us what he is after.
Yes it's his choice ultimately. I usually say this about Tissot because most Tissot buyers usually end up elsewhere. It is the starter Swiss brand without a doubt.
My recommendation is to try out the quartz model and see if you can find one that hits the markers consistently. The fact that the seconds hand misses the marker on so many quartz pieces is what annoys me the most. So I generally pick high accuracy quartz pieces when possible. If you can live with the seconds hand then pick the quartz model.
I would go quartz because: you wouldn't need to set the date everytime you pick that watch to wear in the morning, significant price difference for the same aesthetic = more money for another piece. Tbh, you've named the two variable yourself: practicality, or aesthetics? And I don't live in your brain, so you'll have to choose what you're happy to live with! 😂 Based on my own tastes and needs, I would go quartz. Good luck choosing!!
Quartz, because there are so many variations of integrated sports watches. One day if you decided to get another similar watch, for example AP RO, you’ll thank yourself for having a Quartz alternative in your collection.
I think quartz. Apart from being the nicer movement to take care of, quartz was getting big around the 70s/80s, so I think it adds further retro charm 😁

I’d pick quartz and 35mm as it’s closer to the original it’s based on. But, that’s just me, I don’t think you can’t go wrong with either.
Quartz, the auto has a plastic escapement.
I pulled the trigger with the quartz
One more for quartz
When in doubt, get both.
But actually, I would get the quartz. I don't really think you should spend a lot on a Tissot as eventually a Longines, Tudor, Omega, Rolex would come a calling.
My brother got the automatic with the ice blue dial. Plastic escapment or not, the watch will run fine.
I only went automatic because I wanted waffle dial.otherwise you can’t beat quartz, for the price

Own the ice blue powermatic 80 in 40mm and I adore it! My wife gave it to me for Christmas.

Hey I think you mean “high tech escapement” 😂😉

I’m a fan of the automatic dial personally
I got the 35m quartz for the wife, while I got the matching 40m automatic
I love the waffle face of the automatics

That was one of the reasons why I bought it 35mm quartz
More value and more maintenance in automatic, less maintenance and more accuracy with the quartz

The reason I chose the Powermatic 80 is I really like the waffle dial design.

I had the same problem. I picked the quartz

You want the automatic. It looks so much better than the homogenized look of the quartz based dial variant.
Own the ice blue powermatic 80 in 40mm and I adore it! My wife gave it to me for Christmas.
That leopard strap on the ice blue dial is pimp!
I have decided quartz
The movement alone isn’t worth the headache and price. Yes the dial is beautiful on the auto..
But so does the quartz.
I know many people hate that word. I have some quartz in my collection.
But for me functionality is important. Unless your have bank to service all your autos. Sometimes it’s good to go quartz
I opted for the quartz. 3 times!
