Rolex Oyster Quartz Day Date 19018 - Custom case engraved Ancient Mayan motifs

During the 1970s and 1980s, Swiss watchmakers faced a crisis as Japanese quartz watches flooded the market. To remain competitive, Rolex released its own quartz watch, the Oysterquartz, in 1977.

The Oysterquartz was loosely based on the Quartz Date 5100, which Rolex had released in 1970. However, the Oysterquartz's movement was far more advanced, featuring 11 jewels, CMOS circuitry, a 32000-hertz oscillator, and analog thermocompensation. This made it just as accurate and reliable as Rolex's mechanical movements.

In addition to its unique movement, the Oysterquartz also had a distinctive case shape and bracelet design. The integrated bracelet was attached to a tonneau-shaped case, creating a bold and stylish look.

The ref. 19018 is one of the most sought-after Oysterquartz variants. It features a Day-Date display, fluted bezel, and 18kt gold construction. The Day-Date Oysterquartz bracelet with concealed clasp is a particular highlight for Day-Date connoisseurs.

This 19018 has a unique appearance thanks to its custom engraving case with Ancient Mayan motifs.

No i am in Hanoi, Vietnam.

·

I would have thought the oyster quartz would definitely be more accurate than their mechanical movements.

Yeah typically quartz movement more accurate than mechanical especially rolex oysters quartz as I found it’s no more than 1 minute differ per year.

Even better Seiko Spring Drive which has accuracy +/- 1sec/day

Wow I never realised that rolex oyster quartz was that bad. I guess they are saying that is worst case and that's only 5s per month so probably comparable to everything else on the market at the time.

·

Now that is a unique piece! I would rock that as well!

·

I could never pull off that style, but I appreciate the engraver's craftsmanship. Unique piece, enjoy it.

·

Do you happen to know who the engraver is? Looks great.

·

Beautiful piece! Makes me want the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe all over again 😂🤙

·

I always thought quartz makes sense for complications like a day date. No need to keep setting it every time you pick up the watch. That's why for my mechanicals, I prefer a simple 3 hander.

·

The motives themself are great, but i think the watch looks terrible, sorry.

Most quartz watches today have accuarcy of +/- 10-15 seconds per month, so 5 seconds per month is considerably better than average. Not sure what the average quartz movement accuracy was back then when quartz was in its infancy.

this discussion veered off in a totally wrong direction (quartz accuracy...). Am I the only person who sees that amazing engraving on the case?

·

That is F***ng awesome !. I love it !
