Seconds hand, a source of perfection or an ADHD trigger

This watch made me think, do we really need the seconds hand? Sure it looks good, time seems to go faster etc. but suddenly, I don't have the need to check my watch to see if it is keeping up with NASA's atomic clock.

The second hand is basically a "power on" indicator as well as being an annoyance for accuracy freaks. I am very fortunate that none of my mechanical watches hack. Anyway, if there is an otherwise awful display case back you can tell it's running.

Not really needed on a regular 3 hander. For me it just acts as an indicator that the watch is running. Even on a chrono the continuous seconds can be eliminated, and often is.

I love a nice ticking second hand. Mechanical over quartz, but that's a small matter.

Well, it becomes a two-hander without it!

If I'm buying a dress watch, a seconds hand isn't necessary.

For any other daily wear or tool watch, it's got to have a seconds hand.

Watching the hand tick or sweep is part of the beauty of the art or tool on your wrist. I have a few watches without a second hand that serve their purpose. I also enjoy how some manufacturers can make their second hand appear to sweep more smoothly than others that run at the same Hz. It’s all part of the enjoyment and appreciation of the design. I do acknowledge that omitting the second hand can be purposeful for the design as is the case with you beautiful hammy!

A. I love Dive watches and that’s an ABSOLUTE must for a diver.

I have an absolutely gorgeous Bering ultra thin blue PVD watch that I love to death but I pulled it out just the other night and hadn’t apparently worn it for a while because it was off by two hours so I thought the battery was dead because no second hand… come to find out it was just misset and I couldn’t tell it was running until I popped open the back. Too impatient to wait a few minutes 😁🙄

I like a second hand on an auto not for accuracy but just for coolness of seeing the ticks! I don’t need one on a quartz unless it’s a high beat.

I have several no-seconds watches. I’m fine without a seconds hand.

I mean, it kind of is... otherwise it would be a hander Or no second hand gmt ig

Depends, I'd be fine with no hands on a dress watch, but on sports watches I need a running second hand, but I always prefer a second hand to know that the watch is running

I realise that its pretty arbitrary, but the seconds hand for me tells me when each minute starts and ends. While limited in practical value, it does mean a lot to me to know. Its a more fine grained scale of time telling, but that little guy works just as hard as the other hands, sometimes more, and should be recognised for his efforts......

I don't mind a watch without one, but I do like having one most of the time. That said, non-hacking movements with a seconds hand do not deserve to exist.

·

The ultimate conclusion. 🤪

I Need it to set the time down to the second on an atomic time app and then checking deviation the next day. Just a metric i use to see how accurate my watch is which i also equate to its quality.

Vacheron overseas left the chat 😆

i like a marked rehaut for the minutes, but if i have confidence in a watch then seconds are not really priority.

if somebody askes you the time you dont say "well its just gone 11 AND 17 SECONDS" or "almost 3 AND 48 SECONDS", do you.

you do! 😮

besides at most i wear the same watch for 3 days (usually 2) before being back at the coalface so it wont drift that much. by the time you correct a watch by hacking it for say 8 or 9 seconds of drift , how much time have you wasted ? ya dig?

I have a Dan Henry Chrono where the seconds hand is for timing. I can run the chrono to make it tick, but have to restart it after so long BUT thats not the same!

It occurred to me a while back what i think is missing.... the constant movement that I enjoy with my watches!
