French has many sounds that simply don't exist in English, so it's kind of difficult to explain, easiest way is to hear natives pronounce it and pick up or emulate as many sounds as you can or if you really care about correct pronunciation you can learn the international phonetic alphabet and that way there's no word that can hide its pronounciation from you
I do believe that script writers or whoever is in charge of those details, pays attention to that and definitely adds more depth to the character, as an ex karateca 😂 I also think that when it comes to hand to hand combat, having the watch in that position comes in very hady, way more comfortable and as you said, avoiding the risk of smashing it against something.

it must have been amazing to grow up in the 60's !! many cool stuff happening in that era, and so many iconic were born at that time too
