Fixing a watch!

Hey!

For those who have restored a watch, I have a question, how much did you pay?

Here's the thing, I saw a beautiful vintage art déco watch but it needs fixing, the watch doesn't work at all but I don't know for how much should I pay to make that piece work again !

C'est depend. I'll assume that this is a hand wound time-only movement of fairly common manufacture. Those really are about the easiest things to work on. For the fancy boutique that wants to replace every part with any wear, I get quotes of ~$500. I found a hole-in-the-wall place that services and adjusts for around $100 and I have no complaints with his work. You're free to shop around for local repair places despite not having the watch. You should still be able to get a sense of the range they'll charge (I always ask what the worst case estimate would be) and if you want to do business with them.

I have not collected vintage for a long period but certain conditions have not changed according to a watchmaker that I chat with sometimes when I stop by his repair shop. Depends on what needs to be fixed but if a watch just needs to be oiled and clean should not be more than a few hundred cad here in Toronto. He admits that he is more expensive than most because of his overhead which includes high rent and several staff including an overseer wife on premises.

As with anytime someone asks costs to work on the internet: no one can tell you for your area. Like others have said it depends on the work required and what the going rate is in your area. Good luck!
