Hello, my name is beanhead and I'm a watch addict.
I admit I have a tiny bit of a problem. I, like many of you, can rationalize and justify so many of my watch purchase decisions. "It's a good deal", "it's rare", "I'm locking in the price before the increases!". I've used them all.
However, I'm here today to explain my decisions and to let the court of public opinion decide my fate to give me some 3rd party data. My personal view is that I am slightly obsessed, nay, a healthy obsession, but I am still in control. Am I deluding myself???
Let me share some of my watch purchases this year and lay out my rational arguments
ALS Datograph - my grail watch. I've dreamt of this watch for years and years. The movement is one of the most beautiful that I've ever seen, like a little architectural city. I'm doing well at work, I don't spend much money on anything, and prices are going up by 18-20% soon. So, my rational brain says, F it, you will get one at some point, so might as well to in now before prices go up. Pretty simple decision making thought, but a tough one.
GS Lake Suwa limited edition - I spent years of searching for a GS that I loved, but I couldn't. Something about the watches I couldn't get over. When I saw this unfortunately old and long sold out model, I died. It had the beautiful blue color that I love, a nice wavy lake pattern, gold accents that help make it stand out. After searching for months, I found one in my city in great condition. I bargained hard for below original retail. I felt like this was a great deal and I had to get it!
Kurono Tokyo Chronograph 1 Mk 2 - my first fomo mistake. These are somewhat hard to get given the small batch quantity and they don't make the watch again after it sells out. I got the email and I fomo'd hard. I liked the watch in pics anyway, so I pulled the trigger. Got it in person, but didn't fall in love straight away. Not sure why. I think the very 50s retro style design isn't my thing. Oh well. My first lesson learnt. (I guess I didn't learn my lesson as I don't love the snoopy speedy either, which was bought sight unseen!)
My neo-vintage VC - I wore my friend's white dialled version on for a month. The small 36mm size grows in me and I fall in love. I can get the white dial version easily, so I look around. Suddenly, the black dialled guilloché version that's very rare pops and it's in my city in creat condition!! I drive a hard bargain and I get I for a bit of a premium above the white dial. My justification being, "it's rare, I love it even more than the white dial, you have to have it"...
MJW Ricochet - I love the idea of Mr Jones Watches. Fun, whimsical, and cute. I love the robots playing pinball, but the only drawback - I cant read the damn time! Numbers are too small, the minute discs are in 5m increments, so it's hard to tell what time it is even when I can see it if it's right in between two 5m numbers. Damn, I paid a small amount of money for a bunch of foiled robotw on a watch - basically overpriced jewelry 🤣. Still love it, but I like to at least get some practical benefit.
Well, that's a few examples of my purchase decisions. I bought 10 watches this year and I just came across a Moser Streamliner green dragon for 1/6 cheaper than I've ever rlaeen one before from a v reputable seller, in great condition. I'm really tempted again. Does this cycle never end?

That’s a Hall of Fame collection there. The cycle ends when you want it to end.
Given the collection, this is @Beanhead when he says he has a little, tiny addiction...
If I had the coin to he playing in that league, I'd likely have done just as you did.
That said, I should not be a barometer of sane choices.
No end my friend 🤝🤟
Your doing good my friend 🔥not many things you can be addicted to that bring you joy,and make you look cool 😎with no harm to your body or insides🙄🤣if its in your means flex that shit brother 👊

Why dose tonny look like Christian bale 🤔🤣
The only problem I see here is NO PICS!!! You made us read this wall of text and not reward us with pictures of your collection! 😆
Great collection! I hope the cycle never ends for you. That way I can collect vicariously through you.
Hey just noticed you left of my favorite Moser off your list of recent awesomeness! Is it tantalum? I heard Edouard say it was a nightmare to work with that metal.
Anyway Running through those rationalizations - they all check out.
One addict to another : You’re ok 👌😉

That's the problem, I don't want it to end! But, do I really want to get to a 30 watch collection like some of you magnificent (and brave) folks? My wife would likely murder me if I reach thos heights

I've been subconsciously ignorant to my purchases, so I guess this is my way of forcing myself to reality. So, yeah maybe this is warranted. I'm really gonna try to be disciplined!!!
No end my friend 🤝🤟
No end, but moderation is warranted. After a long drought of being good, I went a bit nuts 😁

Hah! Trying to keep it low key and focus on the problem, but show you shiny new toys!
But here's a few I didn't include in the text as you guys called me out on 🤣
Ueban Jurgensen GMT One
Ita sitting in family home in the States as the dealer was in Florida. I can't wait to pick it up. For those who don't know, this is a small Danish brand that does more dress watches and got into the sports watch game a few years ago. I love the fact that it's less well known, but they have super finishing and love the guilloché dial.
I should receive this Ming world timer in Q2 2024. Technically not a 2023 purchase, but I did have to put 50% down. One of their few watches with a more elaborate movement from Schwarz Etienne. Probably not worth what I paid, eek. But I don't have a world timer and love the ming aesthetic and finally was able to get one. Another FOMO watch, ugh. I think I'm learning to fight the FOMO.

Yeah, I had no solid rationale for the Moser, so I left it off. It was simply, "ME WANT MOSER!!!"
It is tantalum indeed, which was one of the reasons why I wanted it. The FP Journe Chronometre Bleu was ridiculously overpriced for what it is, so I went for this. While it hurts deep in my watch soul to not have it (@JaeBust is one lucky man! Congrats!). The Moser is similarly priced vs The CB's market price, but it's a perpetual calendar, grand feu enamel dial. Not as sleek as the CB, but I'll get my hands on one one day. Spot on about the difficulty to work with tantalum and I respect the fact that it is a tough metal to polish and to machine in general. Tim Mosso said he visited the case factory for FPJ and they showed him everything except for the machines that polish the CB. A big competitive edge.
Check out the curved crystal on the back side to make it fit the wrist more snugly. It's not a thin watch, so I appreciate this small touch. On the sides of the case, you can see the concave portions that are polished. Impressive.

My favorite of your watches, the R2D2 one!

Most of us are thinking this “ You lucky lucky bastard “ love you still bro:) we get you :)
Get to the point where you fill the watch box with what you love, get straps to change things up and then once you want a new watch for sure go tell yourself you need to sell one in your current collection for a new one. If you don't love the new one more than any of the 12 or more in your box then move on.

Yep, I think I'll start to institute a one in, one out policy once I hit my steady state number.. now, what is that?? 🤔
