New GS Ginza limited edition!

Just saw this launched. I LOVE the Seiko alpinist ginza edition and finally GS launched one.

To me, the more geometrically balanced Alpinist is way more beautiful than the GS. Still, an interesting color of the GS and I like the irregular shaped "tiles". It looks mother of pearl like. As I write this post, it keeps growing on me!

Do you like the new release? Is it worth c.USD 5800 or almost 9x the cost of the Seiko at retail or 4-5x grey market price?

Much prefer the Alpinist, but it's "lightning in a bottle" and we're unlikely to see something as special as that at that price again.

The GS dial is spectacular, but not in the same league as the Alpinist imho...

“Limited Edition” Seiko

I’m so done with Seiko and GS and their “Linited Edition” watches. It’s egregious. The Grand Seiko are certainly better watches than Seiko the parent company, but it’s crazy at this point. I feel like Seiko, GS and Omega have a new “Limited Edition” every 2 hours.

🤣 This is true. I guess lots of folks are fed up with the LE game.

I like it when the watch is genuinely special and limited in number and they don't go back and screw those people that chosw the LE watch.

The GS is kinda nice, but that tilted angle kinda throwse off. I'm sure it looks better in person. Hate the game, not the player.

Yeah, sure, but when you make 5,000 of something, is it limited? When you consider that they make EVERYTHING in-house at GS, they can make a hyper technical watch, urushi dial, beautiful strap, just something that is objectively special, make it a 50 or even 100 serial and numbered pieces and charge ridiculous prices for it. We know people in the community will buy it. I just don’t see how making 5,000 (just a number, idk how many of these will be made) of something is “limited.” Also, remember the “Limited” Dark Side of The Moon Speedmaster? Yeah, Omega still sells those. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ginza edition looks nice! Very cool.

No issue with it being a limited edition of 5000 pieces, they at least number the back of the watch so you know there wont be more. Like that speedmaster darkside that you can still buy.

They also have a core collection of non-limited edition pieces.

Can't win with some people

Alpinist dial for me,need to see the gs to fully appreciate it properly, obviously we already know the 62gs case is 🔥but stock photos don't do them justice.

Just checked and they are making 530 of these pieces. Still more than their usual 100 pieces, so not as bad as what Seiko or others called "limited" so GS isn't stretching it too badly.

Exactly. Stock photos for GS are usually terrible I find.

To my eye, the Seiko is a little to complex but symmetrically boring.

The subtle asymmetry of the GS makes it for me.

·

I wonder if anyone knows how they make the dial for the new GS ginza?

I don't think they're individually applied rectangles but how do they get the gleaming surface done so nicely?

Fair point, appreciate your input and opinion!

Hmm yeah good point. Yeah, probably not hand applied. Maybe CNC'd?

You never really know which GSs/ Seikos will be epic, until it's too late to buy. 😔

So we have to commit, sight unseen.

Your SBGK, my Seiko Alpinist, or that nutzo SBGW295 that now costs about the same as an Eichi II (yes, it's hand applied/ maki-e gold dust and black urushi laquer, but it's a 13k watch!)

For me, it'll be pure dumb luck if I happen to be in States or Japan when one of these hot models releases so I can it see in a showroom before deciding. So getting a monster will remain incredibly unlikely. Committing to buy a sight unseen, wrist unworn, taxes unpaid, shipping unshipped... is a bridge too far and a mistake I won't make again.

I'm in Japan again in July and if any of the Ginza varieties are left, it'll be because they weren't super popular, probably for a reason.

But, if I do fall head over heels with a GS ginza, and get one, I'd consider letting go of my Seiko Ginza (lottery? to one of my crunch buddies, at cost...but GS Ginza would have to be quite a bit better and seem like a permanent addition)
