Review: TrollDeep Vintage Saxony Field Watch
Saxony was originally a sub-brand of Sheffield, an American assembleur who sold budget watches from the end of the Second World War until the release of "Fly Like an Eagle" by the Steve Miller Band.
Recently TrollDeep, the microbrand from the Faroe Islands, bought the rights to the Saxony name in exchange for a slightly used loofa, a can of tuna (packed in vegetable oil, not water), and a NYC Transit Token. Their aim was to produce the experience of owing a vintage Saxony watch. And they succeeded.
The first thing that you notice when unboxing the Saxony is the yellowed and cracked crystal. TrollDeep subjects every crystal to intense UV light to simulate age. Craftsmen then create micro-abrasions and cracks to "age" the crystal further. TrollDeep doesn't want you looking at the dial any more than necessary.
The case is made from the finest base metal. Care is again taken to simulate the wear and brassing that come with a vintage watch. Most importantly, the Saxony comes with vintage accuracy. When I first received the watch it ran a few minutes an hour fast. I sent it back to TrollDeep to regulate and it now runs fifteen minutes an hour fast. My workdays just fly by.
Winding this watch is a tactile sensation. The high quality seven jewel movement creates resistance, so that every winding is a workout. The 16mm lug width means that there are a variety of readily available options if the supplied duct tape strap does not suit your needs.
This watch is perfect in the way that every watch with a five star review is perfect.
