NWA: The watch that started it all
One thing I have to thank the Rolex waitlist for is starting my obsession with horology. I wanted a Rolex, like many others, because it’s a Rolex. No other reason.
I always liked watches when I was young but usually Timex, Seiko, and fashion watches because that’s all I could afford. Many years later that itch came back, maybe I should get a Rolex…
I had heard there might be a waitlist so I inquired at the closest AD and they told me it would be a year (not even close).
While I played the waiting game I hopped onto YouTube which brought me to WatchCrunch.
*narrator: this is when everything changed*
I went down the horological rabbit hole. I bought a Tudor Black Bay 58 as my first luxury watch. Was gifted a Cartier tank from my wife (probably to shut me up talking about watches). Then my wife fell in love with a vintage Cartier… what have I done. Then I fell down the Vintage rabbit hole.. got a vintage Patek.
In the background my wife and I are playing the Rolex AD game. Trying to find an AD that was truly going to deliver. Two years and four different ADs later, a month ago we finally caught a break with…. a dream Rolex.. for my wife. With that relationship established, our AD went above and beyond to get me my dream Rolex as soon as possible.
Yes I played the game. No, I didn’t buy anything I didn’t want. As I mentioned in a previous post, there is no list. If the Rolex AD wants to get it for you, they’ll get manager approval.
Honestly, I played the game a bit too long but it was worth the wait for me.
Anyways that my story of how my love for watches started and now my collection finally feels complete…

Been playing the game for a very long time. Also have only bought watches that I really wanted anyway. But like you said, there is no real list. And until they offer you something you’ll never know. I know I’m in their system, but at this point I assume I’m just a fallback buyer for them in case they have most people turn the watch down. I’ve given up pretty much. I stopped going in a couple of months ago. On to other brands 👍

Thanks so much! The game is a lot of small talk, luckily my wife is amazing at it. We texted our AD monthly with a picture of the exact watch. I guess you have to stay top of mind.

It’s funny because that’s pretty much how I got started, got the itch one day that I wanted a Rolex (BTW still don’t have mine) had no idea about the waitlist, on the way to my AD got sidetracked to the Tag boutique to take a look at a Gulf livery Monaco, ended up leaving with a Monaco Night Driver and that was all she wrote. Quickly learned about the waitlist and have been making quarterly drop ins to see my SA and make sure she knows I’m serious about adding a Rolex to my current 18 watch collection.
