Funny thing about Panerai…when I was growing up, my dad had a nice little Rolex collection…ceramic sub date + gmt master II, and a 36mm datejust (white or opalin-USG dial, fluted bez, jubilee hidden clasp)…it was like the Rolex equivalent of buying a 3 t-shirt bundle from a director to consumer basics clothing company…anyway! As he got more into watches, he started trading his Rolexes for Panerai (submersible 42mm, radiomir) and others...
This was during the late 2000’s and early 2010’s. I was not very “into watches” back then, but I obviously knew Rolex was…well, Rolex. So as I learned about Panerai (during the height of their popularity it seems), my understanding was that this was a brand that you know about when you’re “in the know”...fast forward to now, I’m very aware of where Panerai is positioned, and that it is very much a love or hate brand…
I just think it’s funny that your perception, or how you feel about a brand can be heavily influenced by an initial impression…maybe this is why I have a soft spot for Panerai? Because for me, growing up, that was the watch that was the next step after Rolex…lol!
Also…thoughts on the 1940 radiomir 42mm as the perfect all arounder?
Ugh loaded question…In the fall I will become a first time dad! I‘m looking at a watch that I can pass down to my son…looking at some Tudors because of closed case back that can be engraved (nothing crazy…maybe just initials or something)...leaning towards black Pelagos or new BB Pro. I’ve always loved the Pelagos and feel that now is the right time to pull the trigger…Damn, I feel like I need to ask the crunch about which watch I should get now.
First glance, I loved it…2-3 hours later, I officially decided that I was NOT a fan.
2 days later…I officially love it. Maybe slap in a movement with 70hr power reserve, tho?
