I have a 1979 6309-7049 that I love, but the movement is entering its last days and I was hoping there was a current (affordable) movement that is sized right to swap in (preferably with hand winding)
Unfortunately I can’t help you here, I’ve often wondered the same thing about some vintage watches I have.
What would be really great is a database of watch movements and what other movements can be swapped in their place. I’m not aware of anything like this, but hopefully somebody else is. Good luck.
45mm Turtle case should theoretically handle a NH35 but inner cae dimensions can be tricky to fumble.
The 6309 movement in your Turtle should be easily serviceable. I would suggest finding a good watchmaker to service the movement.
NH35 would be good. My watchmaker said it wouldn't be worth it to service, and I really do want hand winding so I can rid myself of the "seiko shake" so NH35 might be worth it.

Have you tried getting the movement serviced first?

My watchmaker said it would be easier / cheaper to swap it out.
