The Mako 40 marks the FALL OF ORIENT

I was more than happy with the new watch until I noticed a misalignment on the 26 second mark.

Image

Initially I thought I received a faulty copy, but it turns out that the misalignment is on EVERY color version of the watch (even on the official images). As far as I know, this is an unprecedented quality negligence from Orient.

Orient…seems you are following father Seiko’s footstep.

Well, they are owned by Seiko group....

I have been eyeing the new Mako 3. Maybe it will be ok?

The mako 3 seems fine, but i’m just not into it.

The Mako 40 is actually my first Orient watch…what a nightmare…

That's an odd one. But you're right, this 26-minute baton is too far to the right and too close to the 5-hour index. It doesn't look like a production defect. Someone f'ed up the layout that was sent for printing. 🤯

It is hard to believe they made such an avoidable mistake. What is even more insane is that they just preceeded as if nothing happened…

The misalignment just “perfected” my blue Monday.

Let me share it again…

Misalignment doesn’t get worse than this.

Hmm... very odd.

TBH if that's the main complaint and at that price I'd be fine with it. Doesn't affect time telling, and you actually have to pay close attention.

If this was a $1KUS or higher I'd be upset, but as soon as these get more available your talking a sub-$200US watch, with a solidly built case, good specs, and a fantastic size. YMMV.

If anything I'm more likely to get one now, for collecting, since this will be corrected once the extreme outrage from the enthusiast community reaches the inevitable OMG-ORIENT-SUX-MY-LIFE-IS-RUINED cacaophony...🤔🫣🫠

You have an interesting point, I’m gonna keep mine anyways.

Yet, I don’t think affordable price is an excuse to compromise on basic QC procedures. Say this would not even happen on a $50 casio analog quartz.

Wow that's a pretty ignorant comment lol. Once you notice something like that, especially on something which you look at everyday, you can't not see it. This is unacceptable at pretty much any price point and can't fault anyone for getting annoyed at that. What's more surprising to me is that Orient usually have really good QC, so this is probably an anomaly on the first batch of watches produced. No harm in making the problem heard.

I agree about the QC, still wouldn't keep me from getting it, once the MSRP reaches the usual or lower Orient price point.

And I would argue this can happen to any manufacturer, that makes anything. Not trying to excuse Orient, they messed up. Wouldn't surprise me if it's already fixed.

Not ignorant, nor defending Orient. Me I'd use it to try and haggle for a way better price. I would be annoyed if I'd paid MSRP for sure, even though it doesn't really effect time telling. But aesthetically it does grab your eye.

My point was more to do with QC issues happen to all, and even the title of the post, the fall of Orient? Weirder stuff has happened in the watch world, but don't think this will be the reason Orient leaves the market. And yes I get it's a joke, but QC stuff happens.

If it bothers you, don't buy it and Orient gets to learn the hard way what happens when you don't check your final product, through losing sales on what should've been a fantastic money maker.

The irony and my other point was, these might actually turn into a novelty/collector item. Just like the Marlin dialed Duros, the SKX's etc. More so if Orient corrects this and recalls the vast majority of the new 40mm, leaving only a relative few misprinted ones in circulation.

And I do not think one should collect these or any watch as an investment, but it might go that way, or not...who knows?

Nnnn... Here was I thinking 22mm lugs is an issue... 😅
