Delayed Appreciation

My favourite kind of watches are the field and pilot watches of the world. So when I picked up the Sinn 556 I was excited, it looked exactly what I was looking for. A simple, no nonsense pilot watch, with a somewhat rakish aesthetic. Even though it was brand new from the AD it was +9 seconds fast so I had a watchmaker regulate it to within COSC specs. However when I had it on wrist I felt like I was unable to bond with it. I bought it on the bracelet, which I found to be clunky with a clasp that seemed to be designed as an afterthought. Only after several strap changes did I realize how much of a beauty I had. The textured rubber strap I paired it with suddenly changed it from the watch in my box that never got any wrist time to now being my trusted wingman, as a pilot watch should be. Do you have a watch that took you a long time to appreciate but is now one of your favourites?

Yes my Quartz Aqua Terra.

Got it cheap, wasn't a fan of quartz but now it's probably my most worn watch.

That is one fine looking watch. An Aqua Terra will never go out of style.

I think that with it’s ”simple design” it will continue to be a winner over time.

Seiko alpanist. When i had first got into watching youtube watch videos i thought it was ugly. When i realized what a beatiful dial specs, versitility and value where offered I bought it just before it was discontinued a second time.

Love it! The new GMT version of the Alpinist looks really compelling to me as well.

Charming

Love the 556. I have the 856 and haven’t had any problems with the bracelet or clasp. I prefer that to any other strap for that particular watch. Everyone has different tastes and tolerances.

It took me awhile to connect with my Seiko Turtle. It’s a big watch, and the first few wears felt uncomfortable on wrist.

I ended up leaving the Turtle in my watch box a few months and planned to sell it. But after bringing it back out and wearing other watches since I realized the turtle had its own unique charm and I began wearing it for what it is and appreciating it.

I love my 556i so much that it’s made me question my own rationality. Every time I look down at it I think “why would I ever want anything else?”.

·

Sorry to hear the bracelet wasn't very good for you. I love the h-links but the bent metal clasp is a bit of a letdown. I hope Sinn makes their new bracelet for the 556.

Interesting! I actually own the SPB317 Slim Turtle myself because I really like that Seiko Turtle look. Looks even better on that bracelet!

I went through a very similar process for my 556ib. Didn’t really like the multi link butterfly bracelet it came with. Put it on a nato which I liked but then a brown leather strap and it’s one of my favourite

Sleek, elegant design wins! That’s a beautiful watch.

My ugly duckling was a ‘driver’ Junghans. I actually put it away for a year or more before putting it on a new strap and falling for it completely.

It’s a great feeling!

Same as me. Field and pilots are the best for me. Sinn is on my short list.

·

Yup. Exactly the same watch, well the 556A to be precise. At fisrt it was to boring for me and I never liked the bracelet. Then it started to grow on me and when you compare it against the other watches, there are not too many flaws you can find in this watch. Eventually after seeing the bracelet in so many different angles I liked it very much, but the clasp still being too low class for this watch

·

I be very extremely happy with that one watch very even that crown a bit long.

Yes! The beads of rice bracelet from Uncle Seiko fits the turtle perfectly. When purchasing it, I wanted to go for a vintage diver look.

This strap changed this watch for me.

Love the 556i. Wear mine on the Sinn black leather strap which I think suits it very well.

The watch I struggled to bond with was my Oris Aquis. I bought it on the black rubber strap which I thought did the watch no favours. I really like it now on a bespoke aftermarket brown leather strap which I’m very happy with.
