SOT(Q)C [State of the (Quartz) Collection]

I just got me a Bulova Jet Star, which prompted me to have a look back at my quartz watches. Like many, I went through a phase of disdaining quartz watches, but I got over it. Who says quartz has no "soul?" To my mind, all of these watches have something soulful about them.

That Filson/Shinola is the watch that kicked me down the whole watch rabbit hole. It was on sale just as lockdown descended on the world, so I ordered it. Due to lockdown, it took months to arrive, so I started looking at other watches. Watches became something to pay attention to that wasn't pestilence and mayhem. I got sucked into a whole nother maelstrom, and the rest, as they say, is history. For $100 it's not a bad watch BTW (but the original MSRP was ridiculous). The case is quite nice. But as you can see, I haven't bothered to replace the battery. In fact, I didn't know it had stopped until I pulled it out of the bottom of the watchbox for this picture.

I learned to use the slide rule bezel on the Citizen Nighthawk (once upon a time I learn to use my father's slide rule).

G-Shock needs no introduction, of course. For me they're utilitarian; I wear them mostly while riding a bike. I once gave another G-Shock (since given away) road rash when I hit the pavement. Fortunately the Grand Seiko was safe in a bag. So I learned not to wear a nice watch while riding. (For the record, the case and bracelet on the square, and the bracelet on the CasiOak are AliExpress specials).

The Citizen Chronomaster is the pinnacle. With its solar powered movement, 5 seconds a year accuracy, and perpetual calendar, I was interested in a Chronomaster as the ultimate set it and forget it grab and go GADA. Then somehow I ran across this model, which had me immediately lusting after it. But since it's JDM and limited edition, I never thought I would get my hands on one, until I lucked into someone selling it on Reddit. I might have overpaid for it, and it's a tad blingy to be a GADA, but no regrets, so it goes.

The Yes Watch shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase, moonrise and set, and more. I first saw it on the wrist of Marc from Long Island Watch, and then it went on sale around Christmas time. It's an unwearable hockey puck, so I use it more as a desk clock, but it's still cool.

I'm on day four of the Bulova Jet Star. I've been intrigued by the Precisionist movement for a while, but every Precisionist watch was way too big and way too garish. And then this came along, with a decent size and a nice design. The 16 beats per second seconds hand is almost perfectly smooth to the naked eye; it could almost pass for a Spring Drive, though you can see a slight jitter if you look closely.

Then there is the actual Spring Drive. It was my first luxury watch, and still my favorite, and most worn. I don't think of it as a "quartz watch," but it's quartz regulated, so here it is.

Very cool post man!

I have a couple G-Shocks in my own collection (GA-100 in khaki, 9300-1 Mudman solar) I have a Bulova Curv with the 262khz chrono movement made especially for the Curv (which I love), a limited edition EVE Online diver style which I am almost 100% sure was made by ArTic Watch company in Iceland, as well as a Dan Henry 1945 chronograph which I wore just yesterday.

My Lady collects almost exclusively quartz watches with a Timex and a lot of G-Shocks in her collection (she loves G-Shocks).

My next purchase will be the G-Shock MTG B3000 series which I recent got to try on and absolutely love.

One of those things is not like the other...the GS might be quartz, but that's a whole different beast. Nice collection.

Bulova seem to be on great form at the moment, I like how they often celebrate quartz rather than hide it away. Exhibition casebacks on a quartz is a bold statement and I respect that.

I want that exact Jet Star! I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it 👍

GS and Citizen competing for who has the prettier dial here... Very nice quartz pieces... Really loving the ruby on that Bulova. Very very nice.

Nice collection and good variation.

·

Great write up. I too lost interest in quartz but mostly think it was quality issues that bugged me more.
